a Russian emigre and wife of Russian sculptor Sergei Konenkova. \u003cbr/\u003eThe collection of letters, obtained only days ago by Sotheby's, are said to chronicle an intimate affair between Einstein and Konenkova.\u003cbr/\u003eThe letters date from November 1945, when Konenkova and her husband returned from the U-S to Moscow, to July 1946. \u003cbr/\u003eSotheby's curators say they indicate that what began as an acquaintance during World War Two in the U-S had flowered into something more by the time Konenkova and her husband left America.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe letters and other items came to Sotheby's via a descendant of Konenkova. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd the auction house's vice president said it was amazing that the letters had remained a secret until now.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"To think that in the immediate postwar era when, if anything, he was more well known and revered than he is even today, that Einstein could have been carrying on an affair completely unknown to the public and, in fact, unknown until the last few days.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Selby Kiffer, Senior Vice President, Sotheby's\u003cbr/\u003eSotheby's says the letters are all the more dramatic because of the daring nature of Einstein's liaison with Konenkova. \u003cbr/\u003eShe was believed to be a Soviet spy who was said to have tried to recruit Einstein on behalf of the Soviet Union's fledgling nuclear programme.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is no evidence to suggest that Einstein knew of her alleged spying.\u003cbr/\u003eAlong with Einstein's nine letters to Konenkova, the Sotheby's collection also includes a drawing and a watch reportedly given to Konenkova by Einstein on her departure from America.\u003cbr/\u003eAltogether, Kiffer says the collection reveals what can only be described as an affair of the heart. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"Well the letters are very personal and very passionate.
