That pope is the head of that, there is so much blood on his hands.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePope Benedict XVI returned to the clergy sex abuse scandal as he preached Saturday in a New York cathedral, assuring priests and nuns that he was close to them as they battled the damage left by the scandal.\u003cbr/\u003eAddressing some 3,000 people at St Patrick's Cathedral, he called it a time for purification and healing.\u003cbr/\u003eSaturday was the third anniversary of Benedict's election as pope and he was feted by cardinals and bishops, priests\u003cbr/\u003eand nuns who jammed the Gothic church on Fifth Avenue.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was met outside by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, while former Mayor Rudy Giuliani was inside.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the start of his trip Tuesday, Benedict has concentrated on the clergy sex abuse scandal that has\u003cbr/\u003eshaken the US church. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has said that it is more important to have good priests than many priests.\u003cbr/\u003eBut atheist groups and religious organizations held protests a few blocks away from where Benedict gave mass.\u003cbr/\u003eKen Bronstein the President of the New York City Atheists accused the church of complicity.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He set up the policy that they would use avoidance to fight paedophiles. The group is perhaps most well known for protesting military funerals by claiming that God is punishing America for allowing homosexuality. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Pope's remarks Saturday are the latest signal during Benedict's visit that he is intent on purifying the priesthood as he affirms traditional Catholic practices and teaching.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also spoke privately with victims in Washington, D.C., in what is believed to be the first time a pope has met with people who had been abused by priests. \u003cbr/\u003eStill, Benedict has offered support to America's clergy during his visit.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said priests who had done nothing wrong had been unfairly tarred by the crisis. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 4,000 clergy have been accused of molesting minors in the US since
