Children gathered outside Istanbul's Eyup...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eShadow puppetry is an ancient tradition in Turkey.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Istanbul's Eyup district, one shadow puppet master and his team have been keeping the custom alive by performing for children during Ramadan. \u003cbr/\u003eChildren gathered outside Istanbul's Eyup Sultan Mosque laugh at the adventures of poor, illiterate Karagoz and middle class, educated Hacivat. \u003cbr/\u003eThe famous shadow play duo has been capturing children's imaginations for centuries. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Oh my dear Karagoz, stop, don't hit me,\" Hacivat pleads with Karagoz. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Then don't stand in front of me like a scarecrow,\" Karagoz replies. \u003cbr/\u003eShadow puppet shows and street festivals are popular in Turkey during the holy month of Ramadan. \u003cbr/\u003eKaragoz and Hacivat's adventures are based on funny misunderstandings and witty wordplay between the Ottoman and Turkish languages.\u003cbr/\u003eHacivat, who represents the more highly educated section of society, continually attempts but never succeeds to change the scheming and deceitful ways of Karagoz.\u003cbr/\u003eHe represents the less educated but straight forward and uncomplicated people. \u003cbr/\u003eThe two main characters are thought to be based on real people who lived in Bursa during the mid-1300s. \u003cbr/\u003eShadow puppet master Burak Dur, who has been performing for 17 years, says that the origin of the Karagoz and Hacivat show is unclear.\u003cbr/\u003e\"According to different legends, (shadow puppet theatre) came from China, or Central Asia, or even India, to Turkey,\" says Dur.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Actually, in Turkey it is also in dispute as to whether Hacivat and Karagoz existed.\" \u003cbr/\u003ePopularised during the Ottoman empire, the traditional Turkish shadow play features characters representing the major ethnic and social groups in Turkish culture.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt is performed by a single puppet master, or \"Hayali\", who controls the puppets and uses different voices to bring them to life.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe puppet master is assisted by apprentices who hand him the puppets, sing songs, play the tambourine and manage a performance that may include dozens of characters. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile a few shadow puppet masters have been getting recognition abroad, Dur says this cultural heritage is only remembered during Ramadan in Turkey.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Unfortunately, there is this thing in our country: when we see something that has foreign origins, we find it so amazing.\" says Dur. \"However, we are not a society that embraces its own cultural values. That is why it (the shadow puppet show) seems to be an art form that is remembered only in Ramadan and has almost become a museum piece.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAfter sunset, when Muslims break their fast for the day, Dur and his apprentices perform for families. \u003cbr/\u003eThe tradition has been kept alive partly because of the puppeteer's ability to improvise and update the characters while still using complicated Ottoman vocabulary.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the 21st century, Hacivat and Karagoz talk about smart phones and currencies that didn't exist back in Ottoman times.\u003cbr/\u003e\"No matter how many 5D movies or animations they make,\" says Dur \"What actually attracts the children the most is what they see live on the stage, puppets, depictions as well as the imagination and creativity of the Hayali (Turkish term for puppeteer) as he performs.\" \u003cbr/\u003eHatice is a a six year-old Turkish girl from France who's in Istanbul for her summer holiday. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Karagoz was alone, because everyone abandoned him,\" she says. \"Then came, what is his name? Hacivat. And they had a fight.
