grapes could be reduced by fifty percent - and possibly as much as eighty one percent - by the end of this century, according to a study published earlier this week by the 'National Academy of Sciences'.\u003cbr/\u003eThe main problem is an increase in the frequency of extremely hot days.... grapes used in premium wines need a consistent climate. \u003cbr/\u003eVisitors to California's famous wine region 'Napa Valley' are greeted by a statue called the grape crusher. \u003cbr/\u003eThis summer they've also been greeted by three weeks of higher than normal temperatures.\u003cbr/\u003eDavid Graves general manager at the Saintsbury winery produces a variety of red and white wine.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut a recent heat wave has taken its toll on his vines.\u003cbr/\u003eGraves,says the grape vines are stressed by heat just like humans get stressed. \u003cbr/\u003eMany researchers and wine producers believe the heat wave illustrates the possible long-term effects of global warming. \u003cbr/\u003eA recent study by the national academy of sciences says climate change could wipe out California's three billion dollar wine industry by the end of the century. \u003cbr/\u003eThe paper indicates increasing weather problems for grapes in such areas as California's Napa and Sonoma valleys.   \u003cbr/\u003eWhen temperatures top about ninety five degrees, grapes have problems maintaining photosynthesis and the sugars in the grapes can break down.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists and environmental experts have become increasingly alarmed in recent years by accumulating gasses such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as a result of the burning of fossil fuels.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe scientists said average global surface temperatures rose by about one degree in the 20th century. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile that may not sound like much, many blame it for melting glaciers, weather changes - perhaps even more hurricanes - and threats of spreading diseases.   \u003cbr/\u003eAndy Beckstoffer, a California vineyard owner, has no doubt that global warming is coming, but believes science is producing hardier grape stock and new ways to irrigate to resist hotter weather.   \u003cbr/\u003eBeckstoffer says temperature effects all the grape growing regions and over a long period of time you can change the quality of fruit grown in the different districts.\u003cbr/\u003eBut still many wine producers remain concerned at the prospect that climate change may bring around years of sour
