Mid of patrons at bar
Twenty years after Bill Clinton's successful US presidential campaign coined the term, "the economy, stupid," it still remains the central issue in the 2012 race to the White House.
This year's election will be decided by a handful of battleground states across the country and voters in those crucial areas are still focusing on the economy and jobs.
Swing states like Virginia, Ohio and Florida will hold the key to deciding the Electoral College winner.
From day one, the presidency of Barack Obama has been dominated by the global recession and the attempts to right the US economy.
His Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, is trying to convince voters that he is leader the country needs, instead.
Just to the south of Washington, DC lies Virginia - traditionally a red, Republican state that has trended purple in recent elections, as it's northern suburbs swing more Democratic blue.
With a 5.8 unemployment rate, two points below the national average, Virginia's state-wide economy looks to be on the rebound.
But, the economic recovery is uneven and the last four years have seen a steady increase in demand on the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank.
Providing food to over 21-thousand people every month through 70 non-profit and church groups, Food Bank President Oya Oliver says many people need access to the food bank's produce because they simply don't have a job, while others aren't being paid enough to live on.
Over the past four years, as the nation has grappled with the economic recession, "we have overall about 31 percent increase on all the services we provide," Oliver says.
Oliver doesn't expect demand to lessen until the local economy, hit by losses in the manufacturing sector, picks up.
Who takes credit for improvements in the Ohio economy, in voter's minds, could determine who captures the state's all-important 18 electoral votes.
In Canton, Ohio, twice retired 91-year old mechanic Thurman Spicer, believes jobs are there to be found.
Spicer considers himself a Reagan-Democrat, one of the traditionally Democrat voters who were drawn to the policies of Republican President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s.
But he says he's sticking with the Democrats this year.
"I think Obama has made some improvement, " he said. "I think the economy is getting a little better than it was."
The heavily courted voters of Ohio are seen as being as politically diverse and representative as the nation as a whole.
The state's mosaic - union-friendly northeast and Democratically dominated cities ringed by Republican-ruled suburbs with Christian evangelicals and soccer moms, small rural towns and socially conservative workers - has helped cement Ohio's reputation as a bellwether for national political trends.
Professor Paul Beck, a political scientist from Ohio State University, has been following politics in his state for more than 25 years.
"Think the real battleground this year is working-class white voters, people who, in some cases, have been ... had lost jobs because of the movement of heavy industry or the decline of heavy industry."
Beck says many working-class white Ohioans, "aren't really happy with Obama, they're not drawn to him - partly because of the part of the Democratic party he comes out of, partly I think in some cases because of his race."
The importance of Ohio voters for both political parties cannot be over stressed.
The state has picked the winner in all but two presidential races since World War Two and no Republican has lost Ohio and made it to the White House.
Once synonymous with the steel and rubber industries that employed generations of blue-collar workers, heavy industry continues to be an enormous presence in Ohio.
The north-eastern part of the state is dominated by auto-manufacturing, steel plants and new polymer companies.
Ohio State University economist Jason Seligman likes to joke that Ohio is the US's Germany, with its strong manufacturing sector.
"Ohio makes the world's best jet engines, " Seligman says. "Ohio makes some of the world's best cars, Ohio makes so many of the parts that go into other of the world's best cars."
Seligman also says the state, which never bounced back from a recession in 2000, is now ahead of the rest of the country in terms of recovery with it's 7 percent unemployment rate.
Obama and his supporters credit federal government action with saving auto-industry jobs and boosting Ohio's economy.
Republicans in the state say actions by Governor John Kasich should, instead, be recognised for improving the local economy.
About one-in-eight jobs in Ohio is linked to the auto industry.
Not surprisingly many autoworkers like Obama.
"Our area is one of the better areas in the state as far as the unemployment rate right now and jobs, so people are feeling a little more optimistic, " says Tim O'Hara, Vice President of United Auto Workers Union 1112.
O'Hara says while there are still people hurting many are "feeling better about the way the economy is headed."
But not everybody is convinced.
Unhappy Youngstown voter Paul Laddy says voting Democratic is the lesser of two evils.
Laddy would prefer four years with Barack Obama as president rather than look at possibly eight with a Mitt Romney presidency - waiting for another, better candidate to come along.
"None of them are going to do anything for me or anybody in this bar ..."
With early voting under way in many states, there is precious little time for either candidates to break loose.
More than four
