agreements with Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia.\u003cbr/\u003eU.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick said the new talks, scheduled to begin in the spring of next year, don't undermine negotiations being held this week in Miami to build a Free Trade Area of the Americas that would stretch from Canada to Chile, excluding only Cuba.\u003cbr/\u003eJorge Botero, Colombia's trade minister, said the new effort was \"consistent and complimentary\" with negotiations for a Free Trade Area of the Americas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe announcement was the latest step in U.S. attempts to integrate the region economically. \u003cbr/\u003eThe United States has free trade agreements with Canada, Mexico and Chile, and is in the process of negotiating similar pacts with Central American of U.S. manufacturers has said that the free trade region must be comprehensive to benefit all of the hemisphere's nations.\u003cbr/\u003eTalks leading up the this week's FTAA negotiations have been tense, with Brazil criticizing the U.S. position that agricultural issues should be decided by the 146-member World Trade Organization.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout a dozen Latin American nations joined Brazil and others in standing up to the United States and Europe in September, when WTO talks on reducing agricultural subsidies collapsed with no agreement.\u003cbr/\u003eYet that united front has largely dissolved, and most Latin American nations have shown a new willingness to negotiate with the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eEven Brazil now says it is easier to work with - rather than against - the world's most powerful economy.\u003cbr/\u003ePrivately, Latin American trade officials have grumbled about the U.S. government's attitude, including Zoellick's public branding of some countries as
