with lasers and ground-penetrating radar made its first flight over the icy continent on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe DC-8 left Punta Arenas, Chile, on a mission to fly as low as 1,000 feet (300 metres) over Antarctica. \u003cbr/\u003eLike the NASA satellite that has provided shocking data on how quickly Antarctic ice was disappearing, this plane measured snow cover and ice thickness.\u003cbr/\u003eIts equipment also enabled scientists to see under the ice shelves, measuring the water below.\u003cbr/\u003eThe  operation, called \"Ice Bridge,\" is led by glacier expert, Seelye Martin.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a region that�s been losing ice lately,\" Martin explained,  and the study, he continued, would give scientists an idea of \"the amount of ice that is lost from the continent in this region\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe goal is to understand just how warm ocean currents may be pulling the ice sheets seaward, melting their undersides. \u003cbr/\u003eThese ice sheets are rapidly collapsing, as fast as 27 feet (nine metres ) a year according to a study published in the journal Nature last month. \u003cbr/\u003eIf they disappear, far greater ice masses that lie on Antarctic bedrock could then melt into the sea, submerging coastal communities around the globe.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil now, NASA has used satellites to track the impact of climate change in the Antarctic, but the satellite will be phased out at year's end.\u003cbr/\u003eFriday's flight was the first of many planned as part of Operation Ice Bridge, to cover the gap in data that would otherwise result before the next satellite goes up in 2015.\u003cbr/\u003eInvestigators from the Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, the University of Washington and the University
