Close of numbered coloured bins   \u003cbr/\u003eInteractive robots are getting smarter and smarter.\u003cbr/\u003ePlaying a groovy jazz improvisation is just one of the cool new generation of robots from the Georgia Institute of Technology, \u003cbr/\u003eMeet Simon.\u003cbr/\u003eHis ears might look like car wing mirrors but this smart robot is learning to obey voice commands.\u003cbr/\u003eSimon is handed a red container by his researcher.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing orders, Simon obeys.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's one of the special robots being created at Georgia Tech's Atlanta campus in the US.\u003cbr/\u003eSimon might be smart but just listen to his groovy twin Shimon.\u003cbr/\u003eThis musical marimba playing robot performs a jazz concert unlike any other.\u003cbr/\u003eShimon jams along to 1940s jazz composer Charlie Parker's Yardbird Suite with Professor Gil Weinberg tinkling the ivories.\u003cbr/\u003eShimon's electronic \"brain\" has built-in information of music by jazz masters like Charlie Parker and Thelonius Monk. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen a human musician performs a piece with the robot, the machine plays it back at him by 'enhancing' the original version based on the musical archive stored in its brain.   \u003cbr/\u003eShimon can create music resulting from an exact mathematical combination of different musical styles, says Professor Gil Weinberg, director of Georgia Tech's Centre for Music Technology.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What Shimon does, that humans cannot, because it's so algorithmic and it's translated into numbers we can morph Parker and Monk and have 30 percent Parker, 30 percent Monk and 40 percent my own playing and create this kind of hybrid style that humans will not be able to create, not in this accurate manner.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShimon proves four arms are better than two. His extra limbs allow him to create a range of rhythms a human musician would find hard to replicate.\u003cbr/\u003eThis mechanical maestro also has the ability to listen to music and interact with other musicians by looking at them. \u003cbr/\u003eShimon gives feedback by nodding or even head-banging and also by opening or closing its \"eyes\".   \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Weinberg hastens to add that the project is not about replacing human musicians.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What I'm trying to do in all of the applications that you've seen is human-robot interaction. It's all about how humans interact with robots. It's not a machine playing by itself, it's a machine listening to humans.\" \u003cbr/\u003eShimon has played all over the world in dozens of concerts and music festivals, performing - among others - at the DLD (Digital - Life - Design) Munich conference, at the US Science Festival in Washington and a the Bumbershoot Music Festival in Seattle.   \u003cbr/\u003eBut musical robots don't come cheap. Shimon costs around 120,000 US dollars, although Weinberg says he is working on building a cheaper version.  \u003cbr/\u003eJust a few blocks away, at the Robotics and Intelligent Machines department of Georgia Tech University lives social robot Simon.\u003cbr/\u003eThe focus here is on how the machine can learn from a teacher and eventually perform a task through understanding the logic behind a series of examples it is given. \u003cbr/\u003eChild-like robot Simon works alongside Georgia Tech researcher Kaushik Subramanian.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are six bins on the floor, three small bins - numbered one, two and three - and three larger bins - numbered four, five and six. \u003cbr/\u003eSimon has to learn where to drop the objects he is given. \u003cbr/\u003eSubramanian gives Simon instructions to place the red blocks in the larger bins. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the first two examples Simon is able to predict all red objects should go into the larger bins and correctly places a third object, a plastic red flower, in bins four, five or six. \u003cbr/\u003eSubramanian says: \"You basically have a concept that you want to teach him saying that some object of some colour goes through some particular bin and then you basically you give him examples incrementally and after every example he says 'Okay, this is what I think you're trying to teach me'. trying to teach him.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe idea for Simon was to build a robot with a friendly personality, something that would look natural and easy for people to interact with. \u003cbr/\u003eThe team is focused on the understanding of human-robotic interaction and learning.\u003cbr/\u003eThey hope eventually this type of robotics could be used for more practical purposes and that a robot with the ability to learn could be employed as an aid to humans. \u003cbr/\u003eScientists see later generations of Simon helping elderly or disabled people in day to day tasks such as bathing and going to
