Dragon walks along beach out of frame
Villagers on Komodo Island have lived for generations alongside the world's largest lizard known as the Komodo dragon.
The dragons have a fearsome reputation worldwide because their shark-like teeth and poisonous saliva can kill a person within days of a bite.
But that never seriously worried any of the villagers on the island - until the dragons started to attack.
Now they're calling for conservation efforts to be geared towards protecting humans rather than dragons.
The Komodo dragon - standing proud in its natural habitat.
The archipelago of tropical islands in south eastern Indonesia that make up the Komodo National Park are the only places these endangered reptiles can still be found in the wild.
They live mostly on its two largest islands, Komodo and Rinca.
In the past substantial numbers also could be found on neighbouring Padar, but those lizards were wiped out in the 1980s when hunters killed off the their main prey, deer.
Conservationists estimate that only 2,500 komodo dragons now remain out of captivity.
Conservationists from the Komodo Survival Programme are helping the national park to monitor population of the Komodo dragons and measure their growth rate.
These majestic creatures can grow up to 10-feet long (3 meters) and weigh up to 150 pounds (70 kilograms).
"We hope our activity can assist the park management in dealing with the dragon's habitat and population," says Komodo Survival Programme conservationist, Ahmad Fanani.
Komodos are the stuff of legend, but despite their fiery reputation they have co-existed with humans on these islands in relative peace for thousands of years - until now.
Two people have been killed in as many years - a young boy and a fisherman.
Others have been badly wounded after being charged unprovoked.
Three months ago, Main, a 46-year-old park ranger was doing some paper work when a dragon slithered up the stairs of his wooden hut in Komodo National Park.
The dragon went for his ankles, which were dangling beneath the desk.
As the ranger tried to pry open the beast's powerful jaws, it locked its teeth into his hand.
Main has spent most of his adult life working with Komodos and says he has never seen anything like it.
He points out the jagged gashes across his arm and ankle, sewn up with 55 stitches and still swollen three months after the attack.
"In my experience, the Komodo dragons are friendly to us, but sometimes we get unlucky and they can attack us," he says.
Villagers on the islands, however, disagree.
They say the dragons have become increasingly aggressive towards humans and are demanding to know why.
"How could this happen?" says villager Haji Amin. "How could the dragons get so aggressive? We are concerned by this. We have lived alongside Komodo dragons for decades without being attacked. They never used to attack us while walking in the forest alone or attack our children. We hope these dragon attacks stop."
Some believe the aggression of the Komodos is down to an increase in poaching and a policy imposed in 1994 that prohibits residents from feeding the dragons.
The reptiles eat 80 percent of their weight.
They then go without food for several weeks.
Park officials say the ban cannot be lifted. They say the point of the prohibition is to protect the dragons and preserve their natural way of life.
Although poaching is illegal, conservationists say the sheer size of the park and a shortage of rangers makes it almost impossible to patrol.
The park stretches 700 square miles (1,810 square kilometres).
The animals are believed to have descended from a larger lizard on Indonesia's main island Java or Australia around 30,000 years ago.
They can reach speeds of up to 18 miles (nearly 30 kilometres) per hour.
When they catch their prey, they inject at least 60 known strains of bacteria into the bloodstream.
Septicemia quickly sets in and the dragons return within days to eat the rotting carcasses.
The rangers at the park insist that the giant lizards have always been dangerous and should be treated as such, however tame they may appear.
Four people have been killed in the last 35 years and at least eight injured in just over a decade.
But park officials say the numbers aren't overly alarming given the steady stream of tourists and the fact that 4,000 people live in their midst.
Villagers have been startled by the recent deaths, but they also know that losing the Komodo would equate to losing many incomes.
"We are truly connected to the Komodo dragons," says villager Ramang. "We hope the dragons do not become extinct.
