rate of a quarter of a million acres a year. successive droughts mean the desert sands are engulfing previously arable land to the south, mainly in senegal, mauritania, mali, niger, chad and sudan. the desert's been marching south for over 20 years. but it was the sahel drought from 1968 to 1973 that brought the crisis to the world's attention. a green belt of planted forest from the atlantic to the red sea has been proposed in a bid to hold back the sahara. however, no concerted action has been taken yet. one of the areas worst hit by the drought is northern niger. \u003cbr/\u003e feet waterhole \u003cbr/\u003e commentary: at least a third of the areas livestock, both wild and domestic, has died of thirst or starvation. the survivors are in a pitiful state. these camels are being sold by tuareg tribesmen in a market at agades before the animals waste to death. the tuaregs in this region have virtually no camels left. but it's not just animals whose lives are threatened. the desert's inexorable advance has forced hundreds of thousands of people to move south as the land can no longer support them. they've been crowded into refugee camps like this one at niamey. these are the lucky ones. it's estimated that as many as quarter of a million people died during the great sahel drought. crowded refugee camps mean the risk of disease among people whose health has already been ravaged by thirst and malnutrition. this red cross team, led by a swiss doctor, tours the camps administering simple, but vital treatments, like drip- feeding on undernourished child. but food's the main problem. french military aircraft are flying in emergency supplies of grain and powdered milk for the hungry people. the french military are also helping to distribute food to refugee camps and villages. in the villages, there are mainly women and children. the men are out searching the arid bush for any water they can find. these people have until now lived a self - sufficient nomadic life. but this tradition's breaking down as they become heavily dependent on food handouts, with little future alternative in sight. but there is some hope. foreign aid to niger has resulted in
