Wide of news conference\u003cbr/\u003ePrime Minister John Howard met with President Hu Jintao, as Australia's relations with China took centre stage on Thursday in the lead-up to Sydney's Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders' summit.\u003cbr/\u003eMr Howard welcomed Mr Hu at his Sydney office after which they held a joint news conference.   \u003cbr/\u003eBoth leaders spoke of the strong relationship between the two countries.\u003cbr/\u003eThe loan of two pandas to Australia was part of their announcements, a symbolic indication of the solidarity of their ties.\u003cbr/\u003eHu was asked about China's stance on climate change, and said his country supported the UN framework for dealing with the problem.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Howard administration recently changed its stance on global warming, saying it would support hard targets for carbon emissions at the UN conference in Bali in December.\u003cbr/\u003eThere, negotiations over a post-Kyoto treaty are expected to begin.\u003cbr/\u003eChina has not been a supporter of carbon emissions limits, as its rapid economic expansion has meant it will rival the US as the world's largest emitter by the end of this year.\u003cbr/\u003eHoward indicated that Canberra would earmark 20 (m) million dollars (he did not specify whether this was Australian or US dollars) for developing clean coal technology, as part of an agreement with China.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Chinese president and Mr Howard also discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties between the countries, which share a growing economic reliance on each other.\u003cbr/\u003eThey were also set to agree to further their security cooperation through an annual strategic dialogue, similar to discussions Australia currently has with the US and Japan,
