You could feel the love in the air, the happiness. We've always enjoyed his entertainment, and it's like a convention.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Elvis fan\u003cbr/\u003eFans are not the only ones to descend on Memphis, a group that would seem the antithesis is here as well.\u003cbr/\u003eScholars more used to walking through hallowed halls find themselves walking through the legs of a giant Elvis cutout gracing the front of the Memphis College of Art.\u003cbr/\u003eThe college is sponsoring the third International Conference on Elvis Presley.\u003cbr/\u003eConference director Vernon Chadwick, himself a product of Yale and former English professor says the conference is no joke.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a different kind of conference beyond the traditional walls\u003cbr/\u003eand divisions of academia.\"\u003cbr/\u003eChadwick has been studying Elvis' life and impact on culture since 1977.\u003cbr/\u003eChadwick says that Elvis' influence reaches far beyond the world of music and that he is a subject worthy of scholarly pursuit.\u003cbr/\u003eFor example, by  bringing the black music and dance that inspired him to white audience he was opening up more positive race relations in the segregated days of the 50's.\u003cbr/\u003eChadwick says for those living outside the U-S, Elvis represents the freedoms that define America.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"A sizeable portion of people around the world view America through\u003cbr/\u003ethe lens of Elvis. That somehow he epitomizes the American experience. Not only the rags to riches story - the American dream as an economic success - but something deeper about American opportunity and the chance to become somebody and use your own talents and pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Many societies don't offer those kinds of opportunities.
