the robotic technology could pave the way for missions where computers do the driving in space.      \u003cbr/\u003eThey call Tuesday's launch the Demonstration of Autonomous Rendezvous Technology -- or DART. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd with its robotic vehicle, NASA will literally throw up an unmanned dart into space to see if it can link up with another spacecraft.  \u003cbr/\u003eDuring the DART mission, NASA officials say their robotic vehicle will perform a one-of-a-kind test of a fully robotic system.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're hoping the new technology will allow a spacecraft to pinpoint and rendezvous with another craft without human guidance.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also believe such a technology could help take humans back to the Moon and eventually to Mars and beyond.   \u003cbr/\u003eNASA says a series of ground tests demonstrated the capability of DART hardware and software to communicate and to drive a spacecraft without human guidance, achieving both a close approach to its target and a safe rendezvous. \u003cbr/\u003eThe DART test craft will be launched aboard a Pegasus rocket, released from a support aircraft some 40,000 feet over the Pacific Ocean. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter Pegasus is released with the DART spacecraft, it will boost DART into a low-Earth polar orbit, where it will pass over each pole approximately every 99 minutes.   \u003cbr/\u003eOnce on orbit, the DART craft will travel around the Earth to rendezvous with its target, a 105-pound target satellite.\u003cbr/\u003eThe satellite, launched in 1999, is designed for use with a video guidance system such as the one onboard DART.   \u003cbr/\u003eMission planners want the 24-hour DART mission to be accomplished without human intervention as part of the test. \u003cbr/\u003eNASA says the ability of unpiloted spacecraft to dock in space is the first step toward delivering equipment and supplies to the International Space Station, as well as conducting service missions to the Station. \u003cbr/\u003eThe technology also could help when retrieving satellites or servicing civil, defense or commercial space transportation space missions.   \u003cbr/\u003eDART uses what NASA calls the Advanced Video Guidance Sensor to \"see\" and to determine a spacecraft's exact location. \u003cbr/\u003eIt then feeds the information to its \"brain,\" or automated rendezvous software, which performs calculations and commands the spacecraft to turn, throttle, brake and make decisions to rendezvous with another craft.  \u003cbr/\u003eDuring the ground tests, NASA says, a number of maneuvers were demonstrated, including a collision avoidance maneuver, horizontal approaches toward the target satellite, and moving to a docking and hold position to within 16 feet of the target
