Wide pan as Ali walks down sidewalk and gets into car\u003cbr/\u003eImmigrants to the Western world must agree to live by the Western, liberal value system, Somali-Dutch politician, author and filmmaker Ayaan Hirsi Ali said on Monday during an interview with Associated Press in New York.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever her thoughts which Ali expressed in her book 'Infidel' have not been welcomed by many in the Muslim world.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that all value systems, whether they're religious or non-religious, that do not respect the rights of individuals, do not respect women, do not respect gays, that those systems must be subordinate to the rule of law, to liberalism and to The Enlightenment,\"  added Ali. \u003cbr/\u003eShe writes in her book that while the Western world's way of living was not perfect, compared with other factions of society, it reigned superior.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Western culture is not perfect, not at all, but that it is, if I compare it to all the other recipes of how humans should live together, it's the best,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eBut that kind of thinking has caused the controversial author and filmmaker to fear for her life, especially since she is a former Muslim. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I am in danger everywhere I am as long as there are individuals who think they will go to heaven by killing me because I have become an 'apostase.' I used to be a Muslim,\" she added.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's been a long road from her obedient Islamic childhood to a seat in the Dutch parliament and now a spot at the conservative American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC. \u003cbr/\u003eAt first, all Ali wanted was to escape an arranged marriage and a life of servitude to a man she did not know or love.  \u003cbr/\u003eWhile she asked for political asylum in The Netherlands in 1992, using a somewhat exaggerated story, she now admits that all she wanted was her freedom. \u003cbr/\u003eBut her experiences in that country, the attacks of September 11, 2001, and her belief that tens of thousands of Muslim women suffer under the Sharia, the Islamic rules, at the same time as living in democratic societies, changed that. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd that is the subject of her new book, \"Infidel.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn fact, Ali said, the problem in Europe today was not what some saw as a \"rising anti-immigrant sentiment.\" Rather, it was a question of how immigrants assimilate or fail to assimilate into Western societies.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Immigration has created large problems, especially in the bigger cities in Europe. But there are problems of integration and assimilation, as you call them in the US and that now, there is the link between a number of immigrants wanting to come in and the integration problems not being resolved\" she said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"So you see some people just out of pragmatism saying, 'Maybe we should let in less people and give the people who are here a chance to assimilate,'\" she explained.\u003cbr/\u003eIn fact, her position on assimilation alienated some of her former supporters in The Netherlands. \u003cbr/\u003eAli opposed those calling for the kind of multi-culturalism that protects traditions which she says keep women in a state of virtual slavery.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso, after the September 11, 2001attacks by Muslim followers of Al Qaida leader Osama  Bin Ladin, she decided to go back to the Koran and see if what he was preaching was consistent with her faith.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I was shocked to find that what Bin Ladin was saying, was he was inviting us to do, was very, very consistent with our religion, with what is in the Koran, with the traditions of the prophet Mohammed, with the Islam that I was brought up with,\" Ali said. \u003cbr/\u003eHer findings shocked her. She didn't approve of what Bin laden stood for but she wanted to remain a good Muslim.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I just couldn't reconcile the two, so I came to the conclusion that, as individuals brought up within Islam, we had to change the faith from within, rescue it from Bin Ladin,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eAli left her faith in 2002, about the same time she became a representative of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) in Holland's lower house. \u003cbr/\u003eAt this time she also decided to make a film with her friend, Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, to denounce the way Islam gave men carte blanche with women. According to Ali, the Koran's rules keep women under virtual lock and key, hidden, brutalised, and allowed men to beat their wives and worse. \u003cbr/\u003eAli herself was subject to genital mutilation at the age of five and was promised to a man she did not love.\u003cbr/\u003eThe film, \"Submission Part 1,\" was released in 2004. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the film, a woman is provocatively dressed and texts referring to the subordinate role of women from the Koran are projected on her skin. \u003cbr/\u003eHirsi Ali wrote the script and did some of the voice-over for the film.\u003cbr/\u003eOn 2 November, 2004, Van Gogh was shot and stabbed to death.\u003cbr/\u003eRadical Islamist Mohammed Bouyeri, a Dutch citizen of Moroccan descent and a member of the Hofstad Group, was convicted to killing Van Gogh  on an Amsterdam street. A letter pinned to his body with a knife contained a death threat to Ali.\u003cbr/\u003eAli went into hiding, but later in 2005 returned to parliament. \u003cbr/\u003eShe has continued to receive
