Wide of news conference
The United Nations said on Friday that severe restrictions by Myanmar's military junta have left aid agencies largely in the dark about the extent of survivors' suffering two weeks after a killer cyclone left up to 2.5 (m) million people destitute.
Officials of various UN agencies called a news conference in Bangkok to give an update on their relief operations.
Amanda Pitt, United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs spokeswoman, told journalists that John Holmes, UN Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, will go to Myanmar on Sunday to try to convince junta leaders to grant more access for UN relief workers and massively scale up aid efforts.
"I think that clearly what he is hoping to achieve is to try and work with as many partners as possible to consult with everybody on the ground and of course to cooperate with the government of Myanmar to try and just get the response that we need up-scaled to meet the needs of the people on the ground," she said.
Much basic data is still missing, from the number of orphans created by the cyclone to the extent of diseases and the number of refugee camps.
It is also unknown whether all survivors are in camps, on the move or still living in destroyed villages in the hardest-hit Irrawaddy delta, an area the size of Austria.
Cyclone Nargis also pounded Yangon, Myanmar's main city.
The government says at least 43,318 people were killed and nearly 28-thousand went missing when the May 2-3 cyclone turned the low-lying delta into a quagmire of shattered villages.
The Red Cross fears the toll may be as high as 128-thousand; the UN estimates more than 100-thousand died.
In its latest estimate, the UN World Food Program said on Thursday that it will have to rush in 390 tons of food every day to reach 750-thousand victims it is targeting over the next month.
But less than 300 tons have been distributed since Cyclone Nargis struck.
Hamstringing the international effort is the ruling junta's refusal to allow almost all foreign nationals into the delta area, insisting relief operations there can be handled by Myanmar nationals.
The United Nations said the regime has issued 40 visas to its staffers and another 46 to non government agencies, but these personnel have been confined to the immediate Yangon area.
Another big issue is the capacity to move supplies to areas cut off by continued flooding, made worse by fresh monsoon rains.
Steve Marshall, who has been leading the UN Team for Myanmar in Yangon said on Friday that he is aware of only six government helicopters that have been mobilised for aid distribution.
They are able to carry 24 tons of material a day to affected areas.
"The government was using six helicopters and we're able with those six helicopters to do four return flights per day, in terms of relief supplies.
