Zoom in on Romney shaking hands with supporters as he leaves campaign rally\u003cbr/\u003eWith the clock rapidly ticking down to the South Carolina primary, the race for the Republican presidential nomination has turned into a nail-biter between long-time frontrunner Mitt Romney and the former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich.  \u003cbr/\u003ePolls open on Saturday at 0700 Eastern Time (1200 GMT) and just who will prevail is truly anyone's guess.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was only days ago that former Massachusetts governor Romney seemed the almost certain Republican nominee.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a landslide win in New Hampshire - and a wide lead in the polls - a victory in the nation's first Southern showdown looked inevitable.\u003cbr/\u003eBut how quickly the political winds can change.\u003cbr/\u003eOver the past couple of days, dogged by his reluctance to release his tax records, Romney's support in South Carolina hit a road bump.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the same time, Newt Gingrich's surged.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Really, here in South Carolina was one of the first times he's really been pushed,\" explained Robert Oldendick, a political scientist at the University of South Carolina.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And his reaction and the way he's handled things has caused people to question, well, maybe he's not as good of a candidate as we thought.  Maybe he won't do so well against Barack Obama.  Maybe we better take a second look at this,\" Oldendick added.\u003cbr/\u003eThough he led by as much as double digits just days ago, Romney downplayed concerns about the incredibly tight race he is now in, in the final hours before the primary against rival Gingrich, calling it \"exciting\" to be in a neck-and-neck contest.  \u003cbr/\u003eAt a question and answer session with reporters just hours before the polls opened, Romney also sought to downplay expectations.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Speaker Gingrich is from a neighbouring state, (he's) well known, popular in this state,\" Romney said.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has been a strong past few days for Gingrich.\u003cbr/\u003eHe won the endorsement of former rival Texas governor Rick Perry and enjoyed a couple of very commanding debate performances.\u003cbr/\u003eThe momentum could not come at a better time for the former House speaker, who is hoping to use those performances to prove he would be the better challenger to President Barack Obama in November.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, former senator Rick Santorum stepped up the attacks on both his lead rivals in hopes of springing yet another last-minute campaign surprise.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Personal matters are personal matters but they are matters, particularly when when you are in public life... and the people involved were also, in a sense, in public life, those issues are issues that people will look at,\" Santorum said, in reference to Gingrich's past marital conflicts which made headlines in recent days.\u003cbr/\u003eThe stakes are certainly high in the first Southern contest.   \u003cbr/\u003eIn every Republican primary since 1980, the winner of the Palmetto state has eventually gone on to capture the Republican nomination.\u003cbr/\u003eA victory by Romney would place him in a commanding position heading into the Florida primary on 31 January.\u003cbr/\u003eIf he stumbles in South Carolina, it could portend a long, drawn-out battle for the nomination stretching well into spring and further expose rifts inside the party between those who want a candidate who can defeat Obama more than anything else, and those whose strong preference
