Mutambara, Mugabe, Tsvangirai and Mbeki holding hands, zoom in on their hands\u003cbr/\u003eOn July 5th South African President Thabo Mbeki met Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe in Harare, ahead of a Group of Eight summit where the political situation in Zimbabwe was expected to be one of the top issues on the agenda. Mbeki, whom Zimbabwe's opposition has accused of bias towards Mugabe, made his unannounced visit to Zimbabwe before heading to the G-8 meeting in Japan later in the day. During the visit, which lasted only a few hours, Mbeki met with Mugabe and some members of the opposition in his role as mediator on behalf of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). \"We do indeed need to move with some speed to resume the process of negotiations amongst other political formations in order to agree at what it is that needs to be done to respond to the political situation in the country immediately,\" Mbeki told a news conference following the meeting. He stressed the need for opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to be part of negotiations to resolve the political crisis in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eOn July 22nd Zimbabwe released a new 100 (b) billion dollar note, enough to buy two loaves of bread, in a country with the world's worst inflation. Once a supplier of food to the region - Zimbabwe is an economic disaster zone with an official inflation rate of 2.2 (m) million percent and 80 percent unemployment. Zimbabweans lined up for hours to get their daily cash withdrawal allowance of 100 (b) billion dollars. \"It's nothing because you can't buy anything with it.  A loaf of bread is now going for 200 (billion) and everything is following the black market, so the prices are soaring for the majority of people,\" one local said. The new note immediately went up for sale at eBay. The seller put a reserve of 79.94 US dollars on the new note, which in Zimbabwe is worth five US dollars at the official rate and just one US dollar on the more reliable black market.\u003cbr/\u003eOn August 1st the Zimbabwean government released new banknotes, knocking 10 zeros off its hyper-inflated currency - a move that turns 10 billion dollars into one. Central Bank Governor Gideon Gono announced he was dropping 10 zeros from Zimbabwe's currency.  The move comes a week after the issue of a 100 billion-dollar note - still not enough to buy a loaf of bread. Gono said he was also reintroducing coins, which have been obsolete for years, and told people to dig out their old ones. One local resident said he thought the move would work temporarily but \"I don't think that it solves anything.\" \u003cbr/\u003eOn September 15th Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and opposition leaders signed a deal under which Zimbabwe's president of nearly three decades will cede some power. Both sides expressed hope for their country's future.\u003cbr/\u003eSouth African President Thabo Mbeki said Mugabe would be president in the new government, while main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai would be prime minister. A smaller opposition group's leader, Arthur Mutambara, would be deputy prime minister. The deal is the result of three months of difficult negotiations mediated by Mbeki at the behest of the Southern African Development Community. The signing ceremony was attended by leaders of the 14-member regional bloc and of the African Union. Tsvangirai thanked Mbeki, African and world leaders, including United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for their efforts in finding a solution. President Mugabe said it was thanks to African help that the agreement had been signed. The first 30 pages of the 80-page deal were made public after the deal was signed. The deal lays out a complicated arrangement with Mugabe chairing the Cabinet and Tsvangirai heading a new Council of Ministers responsible for forming government policies. Tsvangirai is deputy chairman of the Cabinet under Mugabe. Meanwhile, thousands of supporters of the rival parties threw stones at each other outside the convention centre where the signing ceremony took place.  Police fired warning shots and set dogs on the crowd but several hundred broke through the gates onto the sprawling grounds. The crowd calmed after the initial clashes and cheered as the leaders left. Millions of dollars in Western aid is expected if Mugabe proves genuine about sharing power and beginning to end Zimbabwe's economic and political
