Sunderbans islands at sunset     \u003cbr/\u003eThe Chinese New Year on February 14 heralds the start of the Year of the Tiger.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with only around 3200 tigers left in the wild, conservationists are hoping the celebrations will promote efforts to protect the species. \u003cbr/\u003eNow there''s to be a new census taken of tigers in the Sunderbans amid fears that numbers are plummeting because their homelands are falling victim to human and climatic intervention.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was a leap to freedom for this royal Bengal tigress who had strayed too close to human habitation in search of food.\u003cbr/\u003eOn January 12, 2010 this big cat was released back into the wild by the Sunderbans'' wildlife authorities.\u003cbr/\u003eA rare success story that illustrates how attitudes towards tigers have changed here in recent years. \u003cbr/\u003eJust a few years ago a tiger that encroached on a village may have been beaten to death by terrified villagers.\u003cbr/\u003eWith growing awareness about the dwindling tiger numbers, this time around the villagers informed the forest officials, who helped capture the animal without harming it.    \u003cbr/\u003eSunderbans , whose 3,700-square-mile mangrove forest is the world''s largest, is a World Natural Heritage Site.\u003cbr/\u003eSunderbans means ''beautiful forest'' in the Bengali language.\u003cbr/\u003eIt harbours a great array of life forms now threatened with destruction.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists at the School of Oceanographic Studies in Calcutta''s Jadavpur University say that the water level in the Sunderbans has been rising by 3.14 mm each year against a global average of 2 mm, threatening the low-lying areas .\u003cbr/\u003eA team of experts from the University has also been studying the vegetation on the islands. \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Pronobesh Sanyal says the rising salinity in the Southern part of Sunderbans has led to the tigers moving to the Northern parts which are closer to human habitation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The increase of salinity is very apparent in the southern creeks. And this is giving rise to the man-animal conflict because human habitation is fringing the northern forest only \" \u003cbr/\u003eThe Indian side of the Sunderbans is believed to be home to about 250 royal Bengal tigers.\u003cbr/\u003eTiger head count has traditionally been done by the pug mark (footprint / paw print) method , in which the fresh impressions of the left hind foot of the tiger are collected from the field and analysed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 2001 tiger count was mainly based on pugmark analysis but a new census will be conducted based on the DNA sampling method, using tiger scats (faeces) collected from the biosphere reserve.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe forest officials have also installed cameras inside the forest to study the tiger movements and monitor their health. \u003cbr/\u003eThe villagers living on the islands are mostly rice farmers, fishermen and honey collectors. \u003cbr/\u003eThe frequent sightings of tigers near the inhabited areas has prompted local campaigns to persuade people not to kill tigers and encourage conservation of the biodiversity in the Sunderbans.\u003cbr/\u003eFifty nature clubs have been formed in local schools where more than 3500 children attend sessions devoted to understanding the core tiger habitat and how to preserve it.    \u003cbr/\u003eThe World Wildlife Fund has also been organising awareness campaigns among village women to promote alternate livelihoods and to reduce dependence on vocations related to the forest and the sea.\u003cbr/\u003eSaswati Sen, Director of the World Wildlife Fund in West Bengal state, says that reducing the number of people in the forest will help protect the tigers that live there.  \u003cbr/\u003e \"If less people enter into the forest , then the habitat is rescued or the habitat is conserved.And by that way we are not disturbing the animal also. success.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Wildlife Protection Society of India ( WPSI ) is helping run the Sunderbans Sustainable Tourism project that has generated both direct and indirect jobs for the local people.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tourist lodges are looked after by trained villagers who ensure that no harm is done to the fragile eco-system, and work as guides for eco-tourists.\u003cbr/\u003eSome former poachers are also working as forest guards to protect the animals they once hunted.\u003cbr/\u003eDozens of village committees comprising villagers and rangers to carry out wildlife protection work are already in operation in Sunderbans. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir message - to stop poaching and prevent retaliatory killings of tigers -  is reinforced through audio-visual screenings organised in the village.\u003cbr/\u003eThe villagers are also being encouraged to conserve and expand the mangrove forests.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe Indian government has pledged to spend more on tiger conservation and to help save one of the most ecologically diverse sites in the world. \u003cbr/\u003eThe funds will be used for plantation, wildlife protection and anti-trafficking activities under the Project Tiger
