It became a cultural touchstone for legions of teenagers eager to hear the newest pop music and see the latest dance craze.\u003cbr/\u003eLew Klein was the original producer of the program when it was known just as 'Bandstand.' Earlier this month, he donated his papers to Temple University for research.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He decided that he wanted to make sure that his legacy was preserved and he donated many hundreds of photographs and letters and other material to us at the Research Center so that we can preserve it for research use,\" said Margery Sly, director of the Special Collections Research Center at Temple University Libraries.\u003cbr/\u003eIncluded in the collection are dozens of photos of Klein and Clark sa they pioneered music television. \u003cbr/\u003eThey first met in 1952 when Klein, then a programming director, interviewed Clark for a job as a disc jockey in Philadelphia. Clark had recently graduated from Syracuse University.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, a local show called \"Bandstand\" began airing the same year on WFIL-TV. Klein moved Clark over to host the show in 1956, when original host Bob Horn was fired. The program made its national debut as \"American Bandstand\" on Aug. 5, 1957.\u003cbr/\u003e\"'Bandstand' was sort of the in program of the age,\" said Sly. \"It introduced new artists and songs to high school students and got the music scene started in many ways for Philadelphia and the nation. Back then there wasn't a lot of television, so this was what every high school kid watched when they went home from school and a lot of the high school kids from Philadelphia lined up to dance on the show, to try to get in.
