after a nearby volcano erupted.\u003cbr/\u003eRivers of molten lava flowed down from Mount Nyiragongo, 48 kilometres (30 miles) to the north of Goma, through the centre of the city and into Lake Kivu.\u003cbr/\u003e500-thousand people lived in Goma but now tens of thousands of people have fled.\u003cbr/\u003eFire destroyed many of Goma's buildings and explosions continued as lava came into contact with gasoline and kerosene that residents had stored in plastic containers. \u003cbr/\u003eA large explosion had destroyed the main fuel depot at the north end of Lake Kivu.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo of the three water purification plants in the city were no longer operational.\u003cbr/\u003eA spokesman from the U-N peacekeeping mission to Congo - MONUC - (United Nations Observer Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo ) which has its eastern headquarters in Goma, said swathes of lava 50-60 metres (110-200 feet) wide had cut the town in half.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Red Cross said 80 percent of the town had been damaged, and flowing lava had shut down the airport. \u003cbr/\u003eAt least 14 villages north of town were also destroyed by three rivers of lava flowing from the volcano.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Red Cross estimated that at least 100,000 people had fled to Gisenyi.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the escaping Congolese fled across the border to Gisenyi, in neighbouring Rwanda.\u003cbr/\u003eThe road leading east to Gisenyi  was clogged with vehicles and throngs of people.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands more fled west into Congo's interior.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 3,471-metre (11,381-foot) Nyiragongo and 3,058-metre (10,022-foot) Nyamulagira volcanoes north of Goma are the only active ones amongst a chain of eight that run east into
