Panning shot of bottles of wine from tasting
Traditional European winemakers are in a rut, facing overcapacity, and tough markets.
The European Union is considering overhauling the wine industry, which is struggling with competition from New World rivals.
It's proposing that excess vines are dug up, and subsidies are cut.
But vineyards in Britain are increasing production year after year.
Global warming is said to be helping grapes to grow in milder cross-Channel climates, and the United Kingdom's wine industry is thriving.
Devon, in the south west of the England boasts around thirty vineyards, many planted in the last few years as the English wine boom has accelerated.
Roger White is the owner of Yearlstone Vineyard, which has recently been named Fastest Improving Vineyard in England in the Wine Report 2008, a prestigious wine industry publication.
He admits that UK wine has struggled to be taken seriously, but nevertheless insists that there has been a consistent demand for his produce.
A range of grape varieties are grown and a full range of wines are made at Yearlstone: whites, reds and rose.
But it is rapidly becoming apparent to many UK wine growers that the grape varieties used to make sparkling wine are the ones best suited to weather and soil conditions in the region.
Sparkling wine can only be described as Champagne if it has been grown in the Champagne winegrowing region in France.
An EU law protects the exclusivity of regional produce such as Champagne and Parma ham meaning that items can only use these names if they are made in those areas.
However the technique for making this style of wine - known as 'Methode Champenoise' - can be applied to grapes grown anywhere.
Located on a steep southerly slope on a hillside above the lower valley of the river Exe at the picturesque village of Bickleigh in mid Devon, Yearlstone is 200 feet above sea level and has natural protection from the west, north and east.
The soil is a silty clay loam over fragmented Devon red sandstone with good drainage.
Red soils are amongst the most sought after for vineyards all around the world so, in all, Yearlstone's position is thought to be perfect for growing vines and ripening grapes.
And although it's still early days, those in the know believe that UK vineyard owners will increasingly plant the same varieties used by growers in the Champagne region.
Alistair Peebles runs the Devon Wine School and is a Master of Wine, a title held by only 256 people worldwide.
He is hosting a 'blind tasting' to see how Devon's sparkling wines performed alongside the world's benchmark sparkling wine region.
Peebles believes that UK sparkling wines will increasingly compete with their French counterparts.
The panel tasted 8 wines, 4 wines from 3 local vineyards in Devon and 4 wines from the Champagne region in north-east France, including the top houses of Moet & Chandon and Pol Roger.
Stephen Skelton, Master of Wine and UK Wine Correspondent for 'Wine Report 2008 says that in the past decade the British vinters have been growing more sparkling wine varieties including Pinot Noir, Pinot Menuier and Chardonnay.
Winemakers, restaurateurs and winelovers recently attended a 'Local Wine Heroes - Evening and Masterclass' evening.
The evening was an opportunity for people to sample local wines alongside local foods, and to learn about wine growing in the county from the people who do it.
Geoff Bowen, owner of Pebblebed Vineyards in south Devon, gave a short presentation of his business.
Pebblebed Vineyards has around 22 acres planted with vines and have already gained considerable local and national attention, in particular a prestigious national Gold Medal at the English and Welsh Wine of the Year Awards in 2004.
Pebblebed Vineyards recently launched a sparkling wine - Pebblebed Sparkling Rose.
Scientists at the UK Metrological office say that recent research undertaken in the Midlands and East Anglia show that since 1960 average temperatures have increased by one degree celsius (33.8 degrees Fahrenheit).
Skelton says that climate change will be positive for the British wine industry and in future some red wine grape varieties may be produced.
He predicts that the Chardonnay grape will come to dominate here and one day southern England may rival the French region of Chablis in the production of still Chardonnay based wines.
However not everyone is hoping the climate will continue to warm.
Geoff Bowen says that despite all the hype about climate change he just wants good consistent English summers to produced 'cool-climate' wines.
The unpredictable British weather is a challenge to all farmers here, the 2006 summer was hotter than average with very little rainfall, and summer 2007 was very wet and there was a lot of rainfall and flooding across much of southern England.
English wine is not such a new phenomenon, vineyards were introduced to the UK during the Roman occupation and flourished until the 13th century, when the climate cooled.
Britain's modern-day wine business produces an average of 1.9 (m) million bottles annually, a small amount compared with the 7 (b) billion bottles manufactured in France each year.
The Wine Standards Branch of the Food Standards Agency reports that the 2006 production figures for English and Welsh wines was one of their highest volumes on record.
3,369,000 million bottles were produced from the 2006 harvest, the third highest volume since production records
