Wide of deserted embroidery unit from where children were rescued   \u003cbr/\u003ePolice and child labour activists rescued 62 young boys from a sweatshop in India's capital New Delhi on Wednesday, illustrating the continued widespread problem of child labour in the South Asian country.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rescue comes just a day before the world marks the World Day Against Child Labour on 12 June.\u003cbr/\u003eVolunteers raided four sweatshops in the Bhajanpura neighbourhood in North-east Delhi and took the rescued children were embroidering women's garments to a nearby police station. \u003cbr/\u003eAs the rescue team arrived at the factory buildings, scores of children living and working at the premises showed signs of shock.\u003cbr/\u003eA charity worker described living conditions in the sweetshop as grim.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They were not just child labour, let me underscore here that they were trafficked children, they were bonded child labourers, so it is virtual slavery,\" said Kailash Satyarthi from the Save the Children Mission.\u003cbr/\u003eSatyarthi said most of the children that they rescued came from farming families in Bihar, India's most impoverished eastern state.   \u003cbr/\u003eFifty-five of them were aged between 8 and 14 and earned just 2 US dollars a week.\u003cbr/\u003eEmbroidery factories require the use of very fine needles and glittering synthetic fibres to make long saris worn by Indian women and they favour child workers because their nimble fingers are able to sew the intricate designs .     \u003cbr/\u003eDeputy Labour Commissioner, K. R. Verma described the conditions in the sweetshop as \"miserable\" \u003cbr/\u003e\"They don't get proper wages and they don't have proper facilities. Many children do not even know the middleman who got them here,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials said the children were rescued under the Bonded Labour Abolition Act 1976, and will be sent back to their families under supervision to ensure adequate economic and social rehabilitation.\u003cbr/\u003eChild labour is common in India where children are given very little food and paid next to nothing for their work. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government estimates that 13 (m) million children work, many in hazardous industries such as glassmaking, where such labour has long been banned. \u003cbr/\u003eRights activists place the number as high as 60 (m) million, with one estimate saying that 20 percent of India's economy is dependent on children under 14.\u003cbr/\u003eTrafficking children from impoverished rural areas brings tens of thousands of them to urban manufacturing centres in search of employment every year, often to pay off family debts .\u003cbr/\u003eLaws to prevent children from working in hazardous industries and exploitative child labour do exist but prosecution of those who flout the rules is rare.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 1986 Child Labour Prohibition and Regulation Act makes it a criminal offence to employ children below 14 years \"in any occupation having the possibility of health hazard.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIndia has also banned hiring children under
