Zoom in of Leander working on Ramazzotti sculpture\u003cbr/\u003eIn a remote town on the Caribbean's largest island two unlikely people have created a one-of-a-kind attraction visited by hundreds of thousands of foreign tourists and locals alike.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the provincial town of Bayamo, eight hundred kilometres (five miles) south of Havana, Cuba and far away from the hustle and bustle of international tourism, 61-year-old Rafael Barrios and his son Leander, 30, have fashioned in bee's wax the likenesses of almost a dozen local and international personalities as well as over 70 exotic birds.\u003cbr/\u003eSurprisingly enough, these men have absolutely no formal academic training in the arts and to this day continue to raise chickens and ducks at home in order to cope with the difficult economic times affecting the world.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a small and cramped upstairs room of the house where they live, the Barrios' have their workshop which consists mostly of a handful of old tools like screw drivers and pliers and some chunks of wax all of which are resting on an old and worn wooden table. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Barrios have also begun working on a piece commissioned by the Cuban government to create a wax figure of revolutionary hero, Che Guevara.\u003cbr/\u003eThat work in progress is veiled in secrecy and will not be permitted to be seen or photographed until it is finished and takes its place at the small museum that houses the Barrios' works on Bayamo's main boulevard.\u003cbr/\u003eEven though the museum is off the beaten track, city officials say it has received more than 700-thousand visitors since opening its doors to the public in 2004 with just one sculpture.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir first figure was that of a local Cuban folk singer whom had met an untimely death.\u003cbr/\u003ePolo Montanez was an up and coming singer who recorded just one album before he died in a car accident in November of 2002. \u003cbr/\u003eThat album continues to be a best seller on the island nine years after his death.\u003cbr/\u003eLeander, who was already sculpting birds as a hobby, decided to pay homage to his favourite Cuban singer by making a life size statue fashioned out of bee's wax.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen word of the statue spread through the town, and then later through the nearby provinces, thousands of fans made the pilgrimage to the Barrios' home to see Polo's likeness standing in the Barrios' living room.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter three months, the crowds began to get out of hand and that's when the Ministry of Culture stepped in creating a permanent space for the statue in downtown Bayamo.\u003cbr/\u003eSoon the lone statue was on exhibition alongside dozens of lifelike wax birds and amazingly alive-looking wax figures of national and international recognition created by Leander and Rafael Barrios.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong those on exhibit are Compay Segundo of Buena Vista Social Club fame, 1940's and 50's big band singer Beny More, Tropicana lounge singer and pianist Bola de Nieve, Cuba's national hero Jose Marti, and US Noble Laureate Earnest Hemingway.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors say, the wax sculptures bear an uncanny likeness to the figures they represent. They even seem eerily alive. \u003cbr/\u003eHemingway's eyes follow you around the room as you walk; an optical illusion similar to Da Vinci's painting of the Mona Lisa.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike wax figures at other museums around the world, the Barrios sculptures are made entirely of bee's wax and not paraffin wax or vinyl, nor do they include glass eyes or plastic teeth. \u003cbr/\u003eThe teeth, eyes, and fingernails are all made of wax. \u003cbr/\u003eEven the cigar Hemingway is holding in his left hand is made of wax. So is Benny More's dandy hat and walking stick.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hair is real human hair. According to the Barrios', when they are close to finishing a wax figure and are ready to put hair on its head, they go for a walk around town and look for someone who has a similar head of hair as their subject. \u003cbr/\u003eThey said they then ask that person if they would like to help their project by donating hair and becoming a permanent part of the new exhibition.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far, they say they have never been rejected.\u003cbr/\u003eAdmission to the state-run museum was free until last year when an entrance fee was imposed to help offset rising energy costs related to the building's use of air conditioning.\u003cbr/\u003ePrice of admission for Cuban nationals is the equivalent of five US cents.\u003cbr/\u003eFor foreigners admission is 1.20 US dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are approximately 16 wax museums around the world. \u003cbr/\u003eThe majority operating under the name of Madame Tussauds who opened the her first museum on London's famed Baker Street in 1835.\u003cbr/\u003eBayamo's wax museum is one of only three in Latin America. \u003cbr/\u003eThe other two are in Mexico and Brazil and are privately
