The World Health Organisations estimates that there are 14 million new cases every year.
Fifty percent of all cancer patients will receive radiotherapy as part of their treatment.
Scientists from the University of Lincoln believe positively charged particles, called Protons, offer a new form of radiotherapy.
They've developed PraVDA, an instrument that lets clinicians see in 3D how the Protons interact with cancerous tumours and to do it, they use detectors from the Large Hadron Collider which provided evidence of the Higgs Boson.
The reason cancer researchers are so interested is because protons can deliver big doses in small, controllable volumes - deep inside the body and in especially sensitive areas like the brain.
Professor Nigel Allinson from the University of Lincoln says: "Proton beams have the advantage that they deposit lots of energy in a very small volume deep inside a patient.
