And also I want to get to meet Travis Smiley, who's going to be the mediator, who is somebody who I also admire. But it's basically an event in which we are going to talk about our experiences in film and music and how those two work together.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSantaolalla is a two-time Academy Award winner for Best Original Score for \"Brokeback Mountain\" (2005) and \"Babel\" (2006). \u003cbr/\u003eHe said growing up in Argentina has greatly impacted his work. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that in my music I've always tried to keep the concept of identity. I always try to express who I am and where I come from in my work. Not necessarily by trying to do Argentine music. But I think just growing up in Argentina, a country that geographically is pretty distant from United States and Europe, those great films that we've all watched growing up and listening to all the big hits as well, I also listened to local ethnic music,\" said Santaolalla. \"I've always had a great desire to absorb any type of music, either coming from the States or coming from Europe and I think this added a richness to my native style and it made my musical sensibilities a lot more varied than a kid's who's grown up here in the United States. And I think you can perhaps sense a Latin flavor in what I do.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Motion Picture Academy event, \"Behind the Score: The Art of the Film Composer,\" included a panel discussion moderated by talk show host Tavis Smiley.\u003cbr/\u003eVenezuelan conductor and violinist Gustavo Dudamel made his first foray into film composing with \"The Liberator (Libertador).\" The biopic about Simon Bolivar premiered at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival. Dudamel called the experience \"magical.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"So inspiring because I'm an interpreter. I'm a conductor.  I conduct normally music from geniuses you know like Beethoven, Mahler, Mozart, John Williams for example, Gustavo Santaolalla,\" said Dudamel, who is also the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. \"But then to create, but it's not only to create it's also, it's also to interpret in a way because it's an interpretation of what you see in the image and what you feel and what you bring to that, how you touch the image. It's an interpretation of this inspiration coming from the director. So this I can describe as a magical experience. I never hoped I'd write a musical score for the cinema. Yes, I dreamed about it as a teenager. Yes maybe when sometimes I'd go to the cinema with friends and we'd listen to the music and we dreamed about composing like that. I composed very simple music when I was a child. I was always thinking about the orchestra and the connection to Alberto Arvelo, the director of the film, of course with Edgar, the leading actor, with all the actors. The entire team was great but I was always discovering Alberto's imagination, his genius imagination - he was telling me the story and I was listening and I was putting my stamp, helping  him a bit, giving it color - let's say a flavor in this case - because the color was already there.
