Various of ' Green Riders' group members on their cycle-rickshaws\u003cbr/\u003eA number of determined cycle rickshaw-pullers in Eastern India are at the forefront of attempts to clean up their city.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ' Green Riders' in Puri , a famous temple city and beach resort, are among the poorest members of society, but thanks to a new scheme they're updating their skills to work as tourist guides and offer pollution-free transport.\u003cbr/\u003eGreen is the way to go for these 50-odd cycle rickshaw-pullers , proudly dressed in their green T-shirts as they scout for tourists along the Puri sea-side.\u003cbr/\u003ePuri is one of the holiest Hindu pilgrim towns, with the famous Jagannath temple drawing tens of thousands of devotees and tourists every year. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce a popular mode of transport to navigate through the city's narrow and congested lanes , the old-fashioned cycle rickshaw has now given way to the mechanised auto-rickshaws. \u003cbr/\u003eThe cycle rickshaw's decline has also meant higher pollution levels thanks to the belching smoke from the machine-driven transport.  \u003cbr/\u003eWith hundreds of cycle rickshaws standing idle outside the city's railway station , a traditional and sustainable mode of livelihood is battling for survival, even as the business is booming for the auto-rickshaws.\u003cbr/\u003eThe authorities say an expanding city like Puri needs to preserve the cycle rickshaws as it faces the twin problems of a growing population and rising pollution.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt is to that end that the revival of the cycle rickshaw has been planned.\u003cbr/\u003eTourists at Puri beach are now greeted by newly refurbished cycle rickshaws and polite and welcoming rickshaw drivers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Green Riders project hopes to give the rickshaw pullers a new identity as eco-friendly tourist guides, securing their livelihoods as well as serving the visitors better.\u003cbr/\u003eThe foreign tourists are happy to try a ride on the cycle-rickshaws, saying they are best suited for exploring the congested sea-side town.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Green Riders project is the brain child of a volunteer group called 'Barefoot' , led by Yugabatar Kar.\u003cbr/\u003eKar, a local resident running a travel business, has mobilised several rickshaw pullers with a promise to give them a makeover and to promote them as the preferred mode of transport in the tourist areas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cycle rickshaws pullers are among the poorest communities in the city , living in shanty towns and barely managing to feed their families.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a decline in business , many of them had borrowed money and taken to heavy drinking .\u003cbr/\u003eThe ' Green Riders ' scheme hopes to give a facelift to the cycle rickshaw trade and ensure an eco-friendly means of transport for the town. \u003cbr/\u003eTo make them more presentable and to enhance their communication skills , Kar has devised various training sessions for them.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are given lessons in environmental awareness, taught the importance of hygiene and exercise along with imparting basic skills as tourist guides. \u003cbr/\u003eGone is the untidy attire and an unkempt appearance - instead , they are dressed in smart green T-shirts and wear a positive attitude.\u003cbr/\u003eKar says the rickshaw pullers are being motivated to rediscover the dignity in their profession.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group members are made to sign a formal contract and given identity cards.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are more than 500 rickshaw-pullers in Puri but the 'Green Riders ' group has been able to mobilise about 50 so far. \u003cbr/\u003eKar says they are hopeful of roping in more rickshaw pullers for their training programme.\u003cbr/\u003eThe unfolding transformation in the lives of these rickshaw pullers promises to make their future more secure.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group is also planning to float tour packages that include the services of trained rickshaw pullers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city administration is supporting the 'Green Riders' as it feels the project will help in ensuring safety and security of the tourists.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a new dress code and a newly found identity , Puri's cycle rickshaw pullers are embarking on a new
