Various of two girls playing and catching fish over a boat
A phenomenon known locally as 'the red tide' is killing thousands of fish off the coats of the town of Sisal, in the Yucatan peninsula, on the Gulf of Mexico.
The phenomenon occurs when the decomposition of algae consumes the oxygen in the water, and the lack of oxygen kills marine life.
The month of July (2008) is a month of plenty for the fishermen working in the coastal waters of the Yucatan peninsula.
Dead fish are floating to the surface of the water, asphyxiated, due to the lack of oxygen in the water.
The phenomenon, commonly known as the red tide, is caused by the decomposition of algae that consume much of the oxygen in the water, and this causes the death of sea life.
The fish are not toxic to eat and so right now it is rich pickings for local residents and fishermen.
However in the coming months a lack of fish in the sea mean the local people will suffer economically.
The red tide has become a regular event around Sisal, but in recent years its recurrence is making the problem ever more severe.
Jorge Herrera, is a biologist with CINVESTAV Investigation Centre ocean biologist (Centre of Investigations and Studies National PolyTechnic).
He says the effect is produced by an increase in phytoplankton in the water.
Nitrogen and phosphorus which are components of fertiliser used for agricultural production have been known to increase excess growth of algae in water bodies.
Carlos Rosas, of the Sisal UNAM University says that in previous years the 'red tide' was caused by different kinds of micro-organisms (than in 2008) and these made the fish poisonous.
But he says that this year the fish are suffocated by the lack of oxygen in the water and they are safe to eat.
Local people are happy to eat this plentiful food source.
Some residents scour (search) the beaches looking for dead fish.
The mayor of Sisal, Manuel Canto, hopes the Yucatan government will assist in cleaning the beaches and supporting the local community.
Celestun, the nearest port from Sisal, is still untouched by the red tide.
In Palmar, half way between
