President Barack Obama later in the week.\u003cbr/\u003eAbbas' plane touched down at a rainy Andrews Air Force Base, just outside Washington DC.\u003cbr/\u003eThe president arrived on the same day that Israel scrambled to sidestep Obama's demand for a freeze on West Bank settlements, with a diluted counter offer to Washington.\u003cbr/\u003ePrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's compromise, to remove some squatter camps in exchange for permission to continue building in established settlements, was quickly rejected by hardliners in his own coalition.\u003cbr/\u003eAbbas wants the issue of the settlements to be at the centre of his talks with Obama at the White House on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has already said that he will not resume peace talks without a freeze on their construction.\u003cbr/\u003eNearly half a (M) million Israelis have moved into homes built during the past four decades on land the Palestinians want for their state.\u003cbr/\u003eThe so-called roadmap for peace devised in 2003, which was accepted by Israel, bans all construction in settlements and orders the removal of the outposts.\u003cbr/\u003eObama and his secretary of state in recent days spoke about halting all settlement activity without exception, suggesting Netanyahu may have little room to bargain.\u003cbr/\u003eStriking a deal with Israel on settlements could hurt Obama's credibility and key policy goals, including improving US relations with the Arab world and moving toward the creation of a Palestinian state in a Middle East peace deal. \u003cbr/\u003eWithout a moratorium on settlements, the US president could also have a tough time persuading Arab countries to take his suggestion and begin moving toward normalising relations with Israel.\u003cbr/\u003eContinued construction could also close the door to a two-state solution, defined by Obama as a key US goal.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
