Some people believe that this is a procedure that is for certain traditional reasons, or because it's associated with some religious beliefs. Some also think that once you are circumcised your virility is actually challenged. You also have some people thinking that if you get circumcised there is potential that the fore skin can be used by some people to get rich after doing some rituals.'\u003cbr/\u003e37. Wide exterior of circumcision centre\u003cbr/\u003eIn Zimbabwe, the weapon against HIV is simple: - male circumcision.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 10-minute surgical operation is said to successfully block the virus, and since May 2009 12,.000 men have undergone the procedure.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's not just another poster campaign.\u003cbr/\u003eThese young men and boys are battling for the hearts and minds of Zimbabwean men.\u003cbr/\u003eHere circumcision is the most effective weapon in the fight against HIV and AIDS.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, despite the obvious benefits, persuasion is not an easy task.\u003cbr/\u003eStrongly held superstitions mean strongly held beliefs outweigh the fears of HIV.\u003cbr/\u003eSo these young men and women are making a song and dance about raising everyone's awareness and taking their message straight to the men they want to target.\u003cbr/\u003eThe aim is to educate and explain that the foreskin, contains cells and membranes that are more susceptible to transmitting the AIDS virus into the bloodstream. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also provides an enclosed environment where viruses and bacteria can fester.\u003cbr/\u003eOne campaigner Nota says \"if all youths are circumcised, I think we're going to have an HIV free generation.\" \u003cbr/\u003eClinics like this are key.\u003cbr/\u003eHere men can come and have the procedure undertaken quickly, painlessly and in clean, sterile conditions.\u003cbr/\u003eTwelve thousand circumcisions have been done since the Zimbabwe awareness programme began eighteen months \u003cbr/\u003eRoy Dhlamini, circumcision manager, Population Services International is keen to stress that circumcision is not a panacea and doesn't offer absolute protection from HIV and AIDS.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"it reduces the chance of HIV acquisition, it does not eliminate it. So in addition to male circumcision, males who accept the procedure are counselled to practice other HIV prevention behaviours.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eThis clinic conducts 40 procedures a day and doctors expect demand to grow to as many as 180 a day as word spreads.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir aim is to circumcise 1.2 million Zimbabwean men by 2017.\u003cbr/\u003eThey estimate it will prevent as many as 750,000 new HIV infections.\u003cbr/\u003eDhlamini says circumcision makes a dramatic difference, lowering infections by 60%.\u003cbr/\u003eUSAID's technical advisor Dr William Jansen is one of the doctor involved with the programme.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"male circumcision has potentially a huge contribution in reducing the impact of this disease in Zimbabwe.\" \u003cbr/\u003eDhlamini believes it's important to challenge \"myth and misconceptions surrounding the procedure\". \u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"some also think that once you are circumcised your virility is actually challenged. You also have some people thinking that if you get circumcised there is potential that the fore skin can be used by some people to get rich after doing some rituals.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThat's because some of the population still believe that the foreskin increases virility.\u003cbr/\u003eOther fear the discarded tissue could fall into the hands of traditional healers, or witchdoctors and used in rituals, or the casting spells.\u003cbr/\u003eSome are concerned that the foreign backing for the programme could put them at odds with some anti-western members of the government.\u003cbr/\u003eThe long term aim is for doctors to circumcise babies at birth.\u003cbr/\u003eIt'll certainly be a long process to overcome cultural concerns.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen doctors handed out free condoms here they were shunned. \u003cbr/\u003eYet when a small token price of 10 US cents was put on them, there were suddenly considered to be of value and demand increased because they were seen to be of value.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a continent where many communities are polygamous and heterosexual circumcision is not the solution, but provides a clear way forward.\u003cbr/\u003eTrials and circumcision pilot programs in South Africa and East Africa support claims of a sixty per cent reduction in infection rates.\u003cbr/\u003eThirteen per cent of Zimbabwe's overall population is infected by HIV.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in the most sexually active age group of men aged between thirteen and thirty, that infection rate exceeded 20
