hours after it started on Saturday when 15 candidates announced a boycott over fraud allegations, and interim leader Hamid Karzai sought to salvage the historic ballot, declaring it \"free and fair.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAll of the candidates challenging the US-backed Karzai - who was heavily tipped to win - demanded that the election be abandoned, arguing that the system of using ink to mark people's thumb once they'd voted was flawed.\u003cbr/\u003eElectoral officials rejected the demand, saying it would rob millions of their chance to vote in the country's first experiment with democracy, and\u003cbr/\u003ethat the joint UN-Afghan panel overseeing the election would rule later on its legitimacy. \u003cbr/\u003eFirst ballot results weren't expected until late on Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eEven if the vote was ultimately validated, Karzai's ability to unite the nation, fight rampant warlords and crush a lingering Taliban insurgency might be compromised if his opponents refused to accept the results and insisted that his rule was illegitimate.\u003cbr/\u003eThe boycott cast a pall over what had been a joyous day in Afghanistan.\u003cbr/\u003eMillions of low single-digits, said all 15 candidates opposing Karzai agreed to the boycott.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a 13-member US observer team from the bipartisan International Republican Institute described the polls as \"a triumph for the Afghan people\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe European Union and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe sent observer missions, but neither said it planned to pass judgment on the fairness of the process, saying it wouldn't be appropriate to try to hold Afghanistan to international standards.\u003cbr/\u003eInitial results from the election aren't expected until late Sunday or early Monday, but anything approaching a full count could take as much as two\u003cbr/\u003eweeks.\u003cbr/\u003eVoters queued for hours outside polling stations in bombed-out schools, blue-domed mosques and bullet-pocked hospitals to cast ballots, while more than 100,000 soldiers, police, US troops and other security forces were deployed to thwart attacks. \u003cbr/\u003eHeightened
