The satellites,...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat \u003cbr/\u003eA pair of satellites designed to take high-resolution images of the Earth's forests, urban centres and oceans and to monitor the movement of whales will be launched in\u003cbr/\u003etwo weeks, NASA announced on Friday.     \u003cbr/\u003eThe satellites, called Earth Observing-1, or EO1, and SAC-C, will be launched by a Delta rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, at 18:24 GMT on November 18.\u003cbr/\u003ePlans call for putting the 1,260-pound EO1 into a 438-mile polar orbit. The smaller SAC-C will be put into 436-mile orbit.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA officials said the EO1 carries new technology for gathering images of Earth.\u003cbr/\u003eThe one-year mission is designed to validate the technology for use on future missions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe EO1's orbit will cause it to trail slightly behind Landsat 7, a 700 (m) million dollar Earth-observing satellite that was launched last year.\u003cbr/\u003eGhassem Asrar, director of NASA's Earth sciences program, said the EO1 will take images of the same areas targeted by the Landsat 7 using the new technology . \u003cbr/\u003eImages from the two spacecraft will be compared for quality.\u003cbr/\u003eIn this way, Asrar said, the new technology will be validated and could then be used in future Landsat spacecraft.\u003cbr/\u003eAsrar said instruments using the new imaging technology are cheaper, lighter and take up less volume than the instruments on Landsat 7.\u003cbr/\u003eIf the new technology proves successful, it could be used in the next generation of Landsat spacecraft at a saving of about dlrs 500 (m) million compared to the cost of Landsat 7, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eImages taken from Landsat and other Earth-observing spacecraft are used to monitor urban growth, to evaluate forests, detect water pollution, search for minerals and to assess agriculture land use.\u003cbr/\u003eBy law, NASA must provide a system to produce such images and to update Earth-observing technology.\u003cbr/\u003eThe EO1 mission is expected to last about a year, said Asrar.\u003cbr/\u003eThe second satellite to be launched, SAC-C, is a joint venture of NASA, Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, France and Italy.\u003cbr/\u003eSAC-C carries 11 scientific instruments designed to study such targets as the Earth's surface features, atmosphere and magnetic fields.\u003cbr/\u003eOne instrument is designed to receive signals from tracking instruments being attached to whales.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn Labrecque of NASA said the Argentina whale experiment is designed to monitor the migration of the Franca Southern Right Whale, a large ocean mammal hunted almost to extinction by whaling ships before it was protected by international agreement in 1935.\u003cbr/\u003eLabrecque said tracking instruments will be attached to whales by divers. When the whales surface to breathe, the instruments will contact the global positioning satellite system and record the animals' geographic positions. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen the SAC-C satellite makes its daily pass over the South Atlantic, the instruments on the whales will upload the data to the satellite, which will relay it to scientists in Argentina for study.\u003cbr/\u003eA series of such readings will enable researchers to monitor the whales' migration.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The imaging spectrometer measures the radiation reflected by the earth surface in a much more spectrally detailed way.
