election widely seen as a referendum on the country's faltering peace process.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two main contenders in the 17 November poll -  Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe -  offer widely divergent views on how to end an insurgency fought in the name of Tamil rights.\u003cbr/\u003eCurrently in the prime ministerial chair, Mahinda Rajapakse of Sri Lanka's governing party and a self-described \"proud son of Sri Lanka,\" has campaigned on the simple message that his country must remain whole.\u003cbr/\u003eTo demands by the rebel Tamil Tigers for autonomy in their strongholds, Rajapakse says he will never give in. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Their (Tamil Tigers') aim is to divide our country and destroy our democratic way of life,\" Rajapakse said earlier this year.  \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, he's promised to deliver what could be described as an uncompromising peace.\u003cbr/\u003eRajapakse has secured the support of hard-line Marxists and Buddhist monks by pledging to review the peace process and not to share political power or aid for victims of last year's tsunami with the Tigers.\u003cbr/\u003eHis populist messages also appear to have won him wide support among the country's Sinhalese majority, putting him neck-and-neck with opposition contender Ranil Wickremesinghe.\u003cbr/\u003eWickremesinghe is overwhelmingly supported by Sri Lanka's Tamil and Muslim minorities.\u003cbr/\u003eThe former prime minister, who brokered a 2002 truce with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), is seen by many as best placed to cement a two-decade fight for a Tamil homeland, are calling for a boycott.\u003cbr/\u003eAnalysts say this would strengthen the chances of hawkish Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse winning.\u003cbr/\u003eDiscrimination against the Tamils led the Tigers to take up arms in 1983, and a resulting war left more than 65-thousand people dead before the 2002 cease-fire.\u003cbr/\u003eBut subsequent peace talks stalled in disagreement over the Tigers' demands for broad autonomy in their northeastern stronghold, and clashes, though sporadic, have intensified.\u003cbr/\u003eSri Lanka's Sinhalese majority is made up mainly of Buddhists and accounts for about 14 (m) million people. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Hindu Tamils, in contrast, number about 3.2
