Mid exterior shot of people coming out of Smithsonian Museum of Natural History\u003cbr/\u003eScientists, wringing their hands over the identity of the so-called \"hobbit\" fossil that was discovered in Indonesia in 2003, have found a new clue in the wrist bones.\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers have been unable to decide whether the find was an ancient human ancestor or simply a modern human suffering from a genetic disorder.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, a study of the bones in the creature's left wrist lends weight to the human ancestor theory, according to a report in Friday's issue of the journal Science.\u003cbr/\u003eA research team, led by Matthew Tocherio of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, analysed the surface shape of three wrist bones found with the \"hobbit\" skeleton.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Tocherio, the wrist bones of the metre-high (three-feet-tall) creature are basically indistinguishable from an African ape or early hominin-like wrist, and nothing at all like that seen in modern humans and Neanderthals.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The 'hobbit' does not have this complete complex of features. It has bones that look just like what we see in living African apes today, as well as fossils like Lucy, as well as homo hablis, the original 'handy man,' as Louis Leakey described him,\" Tocherio said.\u003cbr/\u003eTocherio says this indicates that it is an early hominin and not a modern human with a physical disorder, as some have contended.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What the wrist evidence tells us is that modern humans and Neanderthals are like first cousins,\" said Tocherio. \"The 'hobbit' is like a second cousin to both.  And chimpanzees, then, would be like a third cousin to the 'hobbits', the Neanderthals and modern humans.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTocherio said the \"hobbits\" shared an evolutionary great-grandparent with humans, but not a grandparent.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The 'hobbit' isn't an ancestor of ours,\" he explained.  \"But, we share an ancestor back in time, and we share an ancestor with Neanderthals that is more recent than the ancestor that all three of us, with the 'hobbit', share a little further back.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the bones were first discovered some scientists declared them the remains of a new, dwarf species of human ancestors. \u003cbr/\u003eBecause of its tiny stature, the creature, technically known as Homo floresiensis, was quickly dubbed the \"hobbit,\" from the creature in the books by JRR Tolkien.\u003cbr/\u003eSome, however, questioned whether it was really a new species. \u003cbr/\u003eRobert Martin of the Field Museum in Chicago and co-authors challenged the original classification, arguing that it appeared to be a modern human suffering from microencephaly, a genetic disorder that results in small brain size and other defects.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are things that can go wrong in the development of the wrist, Tocherio said, but they do not result in a complete change of design from modern human to chimpanzee or gorilla wrist.\u003cbr/\u003eThe specimen he studied lived on the Indonesian island of Flores about 18,000 years ago, a time when early modern humans populated Australia and other nearby areas.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists had thought humans had the planet to themselves since Neanderthals died out about 30,000 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eTocherio said the discovery of \"hobbits\" indicates another evolutionary cousin who coexisted longer.\u003cbr/\u003eIt isn't known whether humans and \"hobbits\" coexisted on the island, he said, but it is clear we shared the planet for some
