Street scenes\u003cbr/\u003eA Belgian pilot, who was detained in Chad as part of an alleged plot to kidnap African children, arrived at the courthouse in N'Djamena, Chad's capital for his first appearance on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eJacques Wilmart, was one of the 17 Europeans arrested on October 25 when a charity calling itself Zoe's Ark was stopped from flying the 103 children to Europe, where the group said it intended to place them with host families. \u003cbr/\u003eThe group says its intentions were purely humanitarian and that it had conducted investigations over several weeks to determine the children it was taking were orphans.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Europeans were flown to Chad's capital from a remote eastern city after the Supreme Court ruled their case should be moved to N'Djamena.\u003cbr/\u003eWilmart spoke briefly to the media before entering the court house and said those detained, \"did everything they could to save the children.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eOne of his Belgian lawyers said he believed that Wilmart was in a different situation from the rest of the group as his intentions were genuine and to help the children.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We think he is in a different position from the rest of the team and possibly on the situation of the rest of the member of the NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation),\" he told the Associated Press. \u003cbr/\u003eThe group said the children were orphans from Sudan's Darfur region, where more than 200-thousand have died in conflict since 2003. \u003cbr/\u003eThe French Foreign Ministry and others have cast doubt on the claims that the children were orphans from the war-torn Darfur region. \u003cbr/\u003eAid workers, who interviewed the children said most of them had been living with adults they considered their parents and came from villages on the Chadian-Sudanese border region.\u003cbr/\u003eChadian President Idriss Deby said the 75-year-old Belgian pilot had health problems and that his case would be treated as a humanitarian matter. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Monday, a Belgian diplomat and Wilmart family members arrived in Chad to help secure his release. \u003cbr/\u003eWilmart's wife Nathalie claims her husband never knew of a plan to take the children to France and has nothing to do with the possible kidnappings.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 17 originally detained included six French charity workers, three French journalists and an aircrew made up of Spaniards and a Belgian pilot.\u003cbr/\u003eThe six charity workers have been charged with kidnapping and are still in detention. \u003cbr/\u003eThe other four, three Spanish crew and the Belgian pilot of the plane, are being held on accessory charges.\u003cbr/\u003eSeven of the Europeans, three French journalists and four Spanish flight attendants, were freed on Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eAn Air France pilots' union threatened Monday to boycott all flights to and from Chad if the Spaniards and Belgian were not released within eight days, expressing
