SOT Divia Patel - on message behind work - \"I'm keen to say they this is not just a quick look at Bollywood, it's more a serious look at graphic arts for the fantastic colourful images which first and foremost are forms of advertising but beyond that they are documents of society. We can look at images from the 1970's which are full of violent images, very strong action packed films, this is because they were reflecting what was happening in Indian society at the time. India was going through a period of crisis, it had just had a war with Pakistan and formed Bangladesh, there was a state of emergency which impeded personal freedoms, there was rising inflation, crime and this is all reflected in the films and therefore the posters of the time are particularly violent images.\"\u003cbr/\u003e7. SOT Divia Patel - on traditional artists - \"The hoarding artists are here just to give you an example of contemporary practice. hoarding art is a dyeing art being taken over by computer generated images. The hand painted images is something that has been there since the beginning of cinema and has continued to now. It remains to be seen whether it continues beyond this point, but the whole technique of transferring tiny design stage by stage in to a massive 10 ft by 20 ft hoarding is unique.\"\u003cbr/\u003e8. I wanted the work to have some humour to it so that it didn't become too depressing because a lot of the issues that I talk about are quite depressing and so I wanted to use humour, parody and satire to talk about these issues and the Bollywood posters seemed to be the ideal medium to do that.\"\u003cbr/\u003e10. SOT Annu Palkunnathu Matthew - explaining 'Fair \u0026amp; Lovely' - \"In England I actually wasn't at all conscious of my difference in skin colour. I was aware that I was brown but how dark or light brown that I was didn't really matter. Once I moved to India I quickly became self conscious of my skin colour. VS hoarding artists painting\u003cbr/\u003eBollywood comes to the V\u0026amp;A this summer with the first ever major exhibition of posters and hoardings from Indian cinema. \u003cbr/\u003eCurator Divia Patel explains what she hopes to achieve with the exhibition:\u003cbr/\u003e\"What I tried to do in this exhibition is to try and show these as examples of popular culture and how from 1947 through to the present day we are able to see through posters how society has changed. These are posters that are able to convey information about the time in which they are produced. So it is giving you a look at post independence history through the posters.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition follows the development of Indian cinema chronologically from the 1950s to the present day. The show explores the major themes of Indian cinema from early advertising, to the period of turmoil and political unrest of the 70s, to the depiction of women, through to contemporary artists such as Annu Palakunnathu Matthew and Bollywood.\u003cbr/\u003eThe museum have brought in specially commissioned artists to demonstrate the unique art of hand-painting hoarding:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The hoarding artists are here just to give you an example of contemporary practice. hoarding art is a dyeing art being taken over by computer generated images. It remains to be seen whether it continues beyond this point, but the whole technique of transferring tiny design stage by stage in to a massive 10 ft by 20 ft hoarding is unique.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnnu Palakunnathu Matthew's work is heavily influenced by Bollywood images which she parodies using digital photography and typography to create thought provoking images. She told APTN why she chooses film as her focus.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I wanted something that reflected the melodrama and the stereotypes of Indian life and I felt that the Bollywood poster did that very well. I wanted the work to have some humour to it so that it didn't become too depressing because a lot of the issues that I talk about are quite depressing and so I wanted to use humour, parody and satire to talk about these issues and the Bollywood posters seemed to be the ideal medium to do that.\"\u003cbr/\u003eContemporary Bollywood posters also appear in the exhibition and Divia explains why many
