Release honours went to the Russian cosmonaut Vladimir Titov.\u003cbr/\u003eDiscovery is now some 40 miles away from the \"Spartan\" telescope that it launched today. The crew launched the telescope from the main cargo hold.\u003cbr/\u003eThis morning the Discovery team were woken by the music of \"The Blue Danube\", played over the radio by Mission Control.\u003cbr/\u003eThe music was featured in the 1968 science fiction film \"2001: A Space Odyssey\".\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier Commander Jim Wetherbee had spoken of the Russians and the US leading the world towards the new millennium.\u003cbr/\u003eBack on Earth, Mission Control in Houston co-ordinated the release of the sensitive telescope.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The retrieval systems officer reports a release now, with the arm backing away from the Spartan satellite. Again Spartan will perform a pirouette manoeuvre, that is part of it pre-programmed timer.\u003cbr/\u003eSOT: from shuttle.\u003cbr/\u003eHouston:  We copy, Volodia (Titov's nickname)\u003cbr/\u003eThat call from mission specialist Vladimir Titov on board, that Spartan is clear. Spartan will perform a pirouette manoeuvre to be observed by the crew, that's a sign that all is in good health with the space craft... And in just about 30 minutes or so Discovery will perform a slight engine firing to be slowly separating from Spartan.
