Wide minicars driving in downtown Rome \u003cbr/\u003eBite-sized 'minicars' are rapidly taking over from mopeds as vehicle of choice for teenagers in Rome.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vehicles - also known as 'quadricycles' or 'microcars' - aren't exactly normal automobiles. \u003cbr/\u003eThey're extremely small, rarely longer than nine feet (two point seven metres), compared to the around 14 feet (four point two metres) for an average small car.\u003cbr/\u003eThe minicars have just two front seats and two gears, drive and reverse.\u003cbr/\u003eLegally, they cannot go faster than 30 miles per hour (45 kilometres per hour), though some drivers \"soup up\" their vehicles, allowing them to reach speeds of more than 65 mph (110 kph).\u003cbr/\u003eBut the main appeal of the small cars is that, thanks to a twist of Italian law, teenagers as young as 14 can drive them without a licence.\u003cbr/\u003eEven adults whose licences have been revoked, or who wouldn't qualify for one because of health problems such as  bad eyesight, can drive minicars.\u003cbr/\u003eThat is because the vehicles are classified as small mopeds and don't require a licence to operate.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause they are classified as mopeds, separate registration or accident statistics don't exist.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it could be argued that allowing teenagers to drive without a licence is a danger in itself.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, many parents believe the minicars are safer than unprotected mopeds, the other option available to teenagers who don't yet meet the legal driving age.\u003cbr/\u003eThose who can afford minicars, which range from eight-thousand to 13-thousand US dollars, believe they have found a safer alternative.\u003cbr/\u003eLudovica drives her minicar to go to school every day. \u003cbr/\u003eAt 15 years old, she doesn't think a driver's test is necessary to get around safely.\u003cbr/\u003eThe European Association of Manufacturers and Importers of Quadricycles says minicars are almost twice as safe as normal autos. \u003cbr/\u003eBut opponents, including the Italian Association of Road Victims and Families, believe the legal driving age for the minicar should be raised to 16.\u003cbr/\u003eThey argue that the low age limit adds to the danger because young people are more likely to get into accidents.\u003cbr/\u003eThe number of minicars in Europe has remained steady at about 250-thousand a year, with the clientele mostly among the elderly. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in Italy, which has the most permissive licensing laws on minicars, sales have
