Hilfiger sitting down on display and then walking off \u003cbr/\u003eHe is one of the most emblematic designers in the world and he has constructed an empire that''s about to sell for $3 billion (US) dollars, but Tommy Hilfiger says he hopes he has yet to reach the top of his career. \u003cbr/\u003e\"My feeling is that if Giorgio Armani and Karl Lagerfeld and Ralph Lauren can work into their seventies, so can I,\" he said in an interview at a Tommy Hilfiger store in Mexico City on Tuesday (13 APR 2010).\u003cbr/\u003eThe 59-year-old designer was visiting to celebrate the 15-year anniversary of his entry into the Mexican market. \u003cbr/\u003eHilfiger recently surprised the world when the clothing manufacturer Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation (PVH) announced it was acquiring the Tommy Hilfiger brand for $3 billion (US) dollars, creating one of the largest companies in the industry. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company will help the brand grow and have a larger presence in foreign markets, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sale, called by analysts the \"fashion deal of the century\" will keep Hilfiger in his role as principal designer. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We have new owners, \" he said, \"but we only plan to do what we always do. We always evolve our collections. We expand our brand. We continue to grow and to add new products.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHilfiger''s enterprising spirit led him in 1985 to launch a collection that was then considered a cheaper version of Ralph Lauren.\u003cbr/\u003eThe designer, who has also had success as an author and a producer of television programs, says that he feels that with his experience he can be a model for new generations.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Young designers might take a look at the way I did it, because I did it in a slightly different way.
