Now the Indonesian martial art - Pencak Silat - is spreading around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eBut there are fears that national pride will get badly hurt without government support for this age-old sport.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's fast, ferocious, and terrifying to opponents.  \u003cbr/\u003eAcrobatic sword fighting like this is part of the traditional Indonesian martial art called Pencak Silat.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Jakarta's school children there are special classes at the capital's main training academy.\u003cbr/\u003eLessons apply equally to boys and girls.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's all about tradition - the proper costume, the right preparation and a good mental approach.\u003cbr/\u003eBeginners in Silat wear a yellow belt.  Most of their time is spent practising basic postures.\u003cbr/\u003eThis class of around a hundred students come from six different elementary schools across the capital. Ages range from just six to nine years old.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's an attempt to get young people involved at an early age in the national sport, which some see as under threat.\u003cbr/\u003eSilat has been practised in the Indonesian archipelago for hundreds of years.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Indonesian Pencak Silat Association there are more than 300 regional variations of the sport. \u003cbr/\u003eThis academy teaches one of the oldest - the Tapak Suci style - which has official national martial art status.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce they have mastered the basics, students are introduced to fighting techniques and footwork.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Silat is not just about physical combat. The rituals of mental preparation, discipline and underlying philosophy are just as important.\u003cbr/\u003eHizbullah Rahman has taught Silat for 45 years. For him, the true Silat practice has 4 main elements, \"The spiritual element, self defence, art and sport.\"\u003cbr/\u003eClasses are backed up by demonstrations and contests in the outdoor arena where the children themselves give displays of Silat ritual and choreography.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe dance routines help them learn the complicated moves.\u003cbr/\u003eSilat can involve a variety of weapons such as knives, sticks, spears and a wooden fan. \u003cbr/\u003eOlder students show the aggressive side of the art form.\u003cbr/\u003eNine year-old Muhammad Ismail is a newcomer to the sport, but has big ambitions.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have been practising Silat for four months now, and I have spent the last two weeks preparing for this demonstration. One day I hope to become Indonesia's national athlete in Pencak Silat,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd that is exactly the response that the organisers hope for.\u003cbr/\u003eIndonesia has traditionally dominated the sport, taking the title in a hard fought competition at the world championships in Jakarta last December (2010).\u003cbr/\u003eSilat fighter, Sapto Purnomo won a gold medal for Indonesia, beating a Dutch fighter in the final match.  He recognises that there is stiff competition from outside his homeland.\u003cbr/\u003eOver 400 athletes from 32 countries took part in the week-long event.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it hasn't always gone Indonesia's way. Vietnam, who won the world title the previous year (2009), came a close second.\u003cbr/\u003eAthletes from other countries such as Malaysia and Thailand also performed well.  \u003cbr/\u003eThat is a big concern for the Indonesian Pencak Silat Association:  \u003cbr/\u003e\"The Indonesian government is not taking Pencak Silat seriously. If they value Pencak Silat as our culture, then they should give it special treatment,\" says official spokesman Edi Prabowo.\u003cbr/\u003eClasses like these are all part of the strategy. Getting the next generation fired up and fighting for Pencak Silat is a priority.\u003cbr/\u003eKeeping their enthusiasm going is crucial, or Indonesia's stranglehold on their national sport may not
