Denmark issued a similar warning after the rejection of its request to increase the amount of whaling carried out by aboriginal residents of Greenland.\u003cbr/\u003eThe IWC banned commercial whaling in 1986 due to the threat of extinction for many whale species.\u003cbr/\u003eJapan hunts whales for purportedly scientific purposes, which many environmental groups describe as a front for commercial whaling. \u003cbr/\u003eNations including the United States and Mexico say research can be carried out on whales accidentally caught in fishing boats' nets.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Whaling Commission still must consider a proposal by South Korea to resume purportedly scientific whaling, which the U.S. and other countries are expected to oppose when it is formally presented at a meeting of commission experts next year.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother continuing issue is a proposal by European and Latin American countries, plus the U.S., to create a whale sanctuary in the South Atlantic.  That was also rejected at the Panama meeting.\u003cbr/\u003eAt last year's meeting, Japan and other pro-whaling nations walked out to protest at the proposal for a whale sanctuary in the South Atlantic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe proposal would put whales off limits to hunters in the Atlantic Ocean south of the equator. It has failed to win approval at several previous IWC meetings.\u003cbr/\u003eDenmark, meanwhile, suffered a setback in its proposal to increase to hunting of whales to 1,300 for the next six years in favour of the aboriginal peoples of Greenland, an autonomous region that belongs to the Danes.\u003cbr/\u003eThis initiative was rejected by 34 countries, including the Latin American bloc, India and Gabon. Another 25 nations voted in favour, and three abstained.\u003cbr/\u003eThe decision now means that Greenland will not have whaling quotas for aboriginal people, since the old quota that allowed hunting of up to 760 whales in four years will end this year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe concern is, then, that Denmark take unilateral decisions and impose its own whaling quota. \u003cbr/\u003eThe IWC on Tuesday renewed whaling quotas for subsistence for indigenous groups in Alaska, northeastern Russia and the Caribbean island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It was a joint request of the United States and Russia to set catch limits for bowhead whales.\u003cbr/\u003eThese fees were approved despite objections from Latin American nations to whaling in the Caribbean.\u003cbr/\u003eA day earlier, the Commission rejected a proposal that had been driven for over 10 years by most European and Latin American countries plus the United States and Austria, to create a whale sanctuary in the South Atlantic.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
