Various close of bamboo rollers being applied to Hooi's face   \u003cbr/\u003eSports men and women use extremes of heat and cold to speed up the healing process from injuries.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now they're being used as part of an invigorating spa treatment involving hot bamboo canes and cold jade stones.\u003cbr/\u003eThese are tools of the trade in this fashionable London spa specialising in Japanese and Chinese beauty and therapy techniques.\u003cbr/\u003eThe aim is to ensure everyone walking out of the treatment rooms feels refreshed and serene, but this massage is not as relaxing as it might look.\u003cbr/\u003eBamboo canes are stuffed with ingredients to ensure they retain their heat, then they are used to apply deep penetrating pressure on the body.\u003cbr/\u003eThe therapist is Mami Tsang the owner of Chi Yu Wellness Centre.\u003cbr/\u003eTsang says: \"If we use the warm bamboo, or jade to encourage the circulation, where somebody has the inflammatory, like very hot area to the muscle you don't actually want to use heated, it'll encourage even more inflammation so you start, or sometime if somebody have a poor circulation they tend to have cold feet (and) hands (so) it's always nice to have a warm bamboo (or) jade to encourage the circulation. And the other, such as now it's very hot weather so some people have quite puffy feet, or swollen legs (so) it's very nice to have the stone or the bamboo to refresh the feet.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTsang believes its important to treat each person holistically and she has adapted far eastern methods for her more adventurous clients who are willing to experience something different to the traditional hand and stone massage.\u003cbr/\u003ePei Hooi is Tsang's friend and client.\u003cbr/\u003eShe suffers from muscle pain caused by repetitive strain injury caused by her job, as well as constipation and severe hay fever in the summer.\u003cbr/\u003eHooi says: \"Mami has introduce me that the bamboo massage would help to release my problems around my neck that's really severe because sometimes I have a frozen neck and I also have the tightness due to my work, repetition muscle disorder and it actually with the heat and the pressure of the bamboo it helps to actually to release the tension of my muscles.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIt's not for the light hearted, there is a lot of pressure being applied.\u003cbr/\u003eTsang has adapted her training as an acupuncturist to use the bamboo and stones to apply pressure on certain points of the body which she describes as Qi energy channels.\u003cbr/\u003eTsang has been practicing for fourteen years.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore the treatment begins she says it's important to have a full consultation with the patient, to understand their emotional and physical state.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"Looks extreme, but when, probably when you experience it, it's not as like as uncomfortable because we always make sure the person will be comfortable and we also mention that whenever we use more hot, or cold we make sure the person will be aware before we apply (it) so they don't get shocked like: oh! (laughs).\"\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the bamboo and stones are used on the back Tsang drums on Hooi's thighs hips and buttocks with bamboo sticks.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's similar to the chopping motion masseurs use with their hands in western treatments. \u003cbr/\u003eThe aim is to get the blood vessels to expand and contract and increase blood flow.\u003cbr/\u003eTsang says: \"Also when we do the tapotment technique, even though again it looks very painful, what it does is actually quickly contract the muscles and then release (them), so it's actually really a revitalising, refreshing treatment to do it releases tension from the area.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSpecially shaped jade stones are taken out of the fridge for the next part of the treatment, the cold facial.\u003cbr/\u003eHooi suffers from hay fever and claims this helps unblock her congested sinuses.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"You can feel you're breathing like a fresh air into your nose and you can feel, hear the pops inside your nose, you feel something that helps to release it you know that it's working on you.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIt's only when Tsang begins reflexology on the feet that Hooi cracks and grimaces with pain.\u003cbr/\u003eHooi
