The only\u003cbr/\u003edeveloped industry is the once-prosperous Georgian wine industry.\u003cbr/\u003eEduard Shevardnadze recently honoured the wine-making tradition\u003cbr/\u003eduring Tbilisoba, the annual wine festival held in Tbilisi, the\u003cbr/\u003ecapital. Thousands of Georgians took part and the wine was\u003cbr/\u003eplentiful - in spite of the hardships facing the industry. Recent\u003cbr/\u003egrape harvests have been very poor and wineries have been unable\u003cbr/\u003eto pay their grape pickers. But this year's harvest was twice the\u003cbr/\u003esize of last and collective farm directors like Teimuraz\u003cbr/\u003eMaisuradze are optimistic. The century-old winery, Savane, in\u003cbr/\u003eSoviet times was called State Factory Number One. Following the\u003cbr/\u003ecollapse of the Soviet Union, which had supplied the wine\u003cbr/\u003eindustry's needs for growing and processing the grapes, Savane had\u003cbr/\u003eto reduce its output from 50,000 bottles a day to 5,000. It is now\u003cbr/\u003eback fighting for a place in the tough international wine market.\u003cbr/\u003eIn order to make a profit, Savane has begun to sell fine wines and\u003cbr/\u003espirits from a collection assembled in the 1970s which includes\u003cbr/\u003elate Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's hoard of alcoholic beverages\u003cbr/\u003efrom around the world - that features a 350-year-old Hungarian\u003cbr/\u003evodka and a 250-year-old Polish liqueur. Stores run by\u003cbr/\u003eprivately-owned wineries like Savane sell many kinds of\u003cbr/\u003econtemporary Georgian wines.
