Mid shot of US Special Forces bodyguards\u003cbr/\u003eA group of US Special Forces soldiers assigned to protect the life of Afghan President Hamid Karzai have been replaced by armed security men employed by a private American contractor.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 45 Special Forces troops were deployed as bodyguards to Karzai at the request of the Afghan government in June, and have since helped to foil several attempts on his life.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the US State Department confirmed last week that the Special Forces detail had been replaced by 39 security officers employed by Dyncorp, a \"private military contractor\" based in Virginia. \u003cbr/\u003eA spokesman for the US military in Afghanistan, Colonel Roger King, said the Special Forces troops were \"best able\" to protect Karzai when the Afghan government asked for assistance in June, but \"that was never to be a full-time perpetual job.\"\u003cbr/\u003eKarzai's security had been handed over in due course to the US State Department, which is responsible for protecting US and selected foreign officials, and the State Department had decided to engage the private contractors, King said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe decision has been criticised in the United States, both for the principle of using private contractors for important military work, and because the company involved has  been mentioned in connection with high-profile scandals on previous US missions overseas, specifically the company's contract to supply civilian police to the UN in Bosnia.\u003cbr/\u003eJonathan Tepperman, a senior editor for the New York-based Foreign Affairs magazine, said the changing of Karzai's guards \"sent the wrong message\" that the United States was no longer serious about protecting the Afghan president.\u003cbr/\u003eFurther, the Dyncorp employees protecting Karzai would not have the resources available to the US military to protect such a key international figure.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think there's no question that he's at more risk today than he (Karzai) was a month ago,\" Tepperman said. \u003cbr/\u003eTepperman said the use of private contractors on US missions overseas also raised concerns about their accountability.\u003cbr/\u003eUS military personnel are subject to US law when they are serving overseas, but private military contractors are subject to the law of the country they are working in.\u003cbr/\u003eDyncorp employs about 23-thousand staff, many of them former US military personnel, in areas such as secure computer systems for the FBI and military aircraft maintenance.  The company's website describes it as providing \"high quality, responsive support services that enable government and commercial customers to achieve their critical missions.\" \u003cbr/\u003eWith an annual income of almost two (b) billion US dollars, it is one of the largest US private military contractors, an industry that has grown sharply in the last 10 years.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of Karzai's previous bodyguard of US Special Forces troops were visible last month when the Afghan president joined a celebration in the town of Durani, to mark the opening of a major road linking the capital
