As far as the institutions that function, we have an executive branch of the PLO, the acting chairman will be Mr Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), who is the secretary general of this committee. Erekat leaving   \u003cbr/\u003eYasser Arafat's Ramallah compound looked deserted on Saturday, following the departure of the Palestinian leader to Paris, where he has gone to receive u-r-g-e-n-t medical treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the streets of the West Bank town, some Palestinians said they could not live without their president and they hoped for his safe return.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, Palestinian cabinet minister, Saeb Erekat, said the Palestinian institutions would continue to function, despite Arafat's absence.\u003cbr/\u003eHe confirmed that former Palestinian Prime Minister, Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) would head the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and that current Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia would head the Cabinet and the National Security Council, \u003cbr/\u003eHe said the PLO's executive meeting would hold its first meeting later on Saturday. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is the first time in years that the Palestinian leadership has convened without Yasser Arafat in the chair.\u003cbr/\u003eThe PLO's top committee will holds its weekly meeting in Arafat's office in the crumbling Ramallah compound, where the Palestinian leader had been confined by Israel for nearly three years. \u003cbr/\u003eArafat left for Paris on Friday where he is to undergo medical treatment for a serious but still unknown illness.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials
