A Japanese diplomat, a Filipina surgeon-nun, a former Thai prime minister, an Indian  writer...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ramon Magsaysay awards, the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prizes have been  presented at an awards ceremony in the Philippines. \u003cbr/\u003eA Japanese diplomat, a Filipina surgeon-nun, a former Thai prime minister, an Indian  writer and poet, and an Indian environmentalist were recognised for their efforts to  improve the lives of others.\u003cbr/\u003eThe awards are named after a popular Philippines president who died in a plane crash in  1957 and are given out on the anniversary of his birth.\u003cbr/\u003ePhilippines President Fidel V. Ramos was the guest of honor at the 39th awarding  ceremonies of the Ramon Magsaysay Awards in Manila on Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe awards are given in five categories: government service; public service; community  leadership, journalism, literature and creative communication arts; and international  understanding.\u003cbr/\u003eAnand Panyarachun, Thailand's interim prime minister after a successful military coup  in 1991, received the award  for government service.\u003cbr/\u003eIndia's environmental activist Mahesh Chander Mehta won this year's award for public  service.\u003cbr/\u003eSister Eva Fidela Maamo, a 56-year-old Filipina Catholic nun was given the community  leadership award for her work providing free medical aid to homeless and tribesmen in  the Philippines.\u003cbr/\u003eMaamo is also known here as the Healing Nun for her work.\u003cbr/\u003eIndian novelist Mahasweta Devi of  Bengal received the award for journalism, literature  and creative communication arts.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was honoured for her attempts to gain recognition for India's tribal peoples.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ramon Magsaysay award for international understanding was given to Sadako  Ogata, the U-N High Commissioner for Refugees.  She sent a representative to receive  the award on her behalf.\u003cbr/\u003eAnand Panyarachun said he had based his goals on those of Magsaysay.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Throughout my whole life and career, I have tried to pursue the same goals (of  President Ramon Magsaysay).
