that private universities are really the answer to the nation's thirst for knowledge.\u003cbr/\u003eHigher education is big business in India.\u003cbr/\u003eAcross the country thousands of young students are enrolling in universities with the hope of a better future.\u003cbr/\u003eToday one of the fundamental challenges for colleges is how to make higher education serve the growing and diversifying population, without compromising quality. \u003cbr/\u003eIn India, where the economy is growing quickly but the public university system is struggling to cope with the demand, one man thinks he's found the answer.\u003cbr/\u003eLet the free market decide.\u003cbr/\u003eAshok Chauhan already heads a multi-million dollar empire and now wants to become the biggest private education provider in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eWith an ever-growing middle class desperate to have their children educated, the growth of private, for-profit schools has been phenomenal. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the campus of Amity University, nearly everything is a work in progress.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a place where eager students with ambitious dreams step through tangles of extension cords, and crunch bits of concrete underfoot on their way to class. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a place where lectures can be drowned out by the noise of electric saws, and where construction workers sometimes seem to outnumber students.\u003cbr/\u003eThree years ago, this area was nothing but sixty unremarkable acres on the fringes of an expanding New Delhi suburb.\u003cbr/\u003eToday, it's one of the fastest-growing private school systems in India. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd if Amity's founder has his way, in less than a decade it will be the centre of a vast chain of private universities.\u003cbr/\u003eAshok Chauhan says government universities have not been able to deliver what people want. \u003cbr/\u003eBut a little more than 15 years after he began Amity as a small management institute, he and his schools have become ubiquitous.   \u003cbr/\u003eThere are now 45,000 students, 2,500 faculty members and over 600 acres of campuses. \u003cbr/\u003eChauhan says his universities are geared to provide students with the knowledge they need to succeed in the commercial world.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are highly competitive Amity grammar schools and university degrees ranging from interior design to biotechnology, aerospace and engineering. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite not being one of the best universities in India, it has a reputation as a respectable, though not outstanding school.\u003cbr/\u003eNonetheless its laboratories are filled with equipment, and new students are signing up for courses.\u003cbr/\u003eOn offer are job seminars and professional counselling for soon-to-be graduates.\u003cbr/\u003eTony Premu is a second-year Amity biotechnology student.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says everything is better organised at private universities.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother Amity student is Neha Mangal.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says those attending Amity have a secure future.\u003cbr/\u003eMost Amity courses cost about $5,000 US Dollars a year. \u003cbr/\u003eAn unimaginable fortune to most Indians, and about 10 times the charges for a public university.\u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere, Abhishek, a student at Delhi University, says public universities are not able to compete with their private counterparts because of chronic underfunding.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of India's public institutions are world renowned, like the Indian Institute of Technology.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, in 2006 the Indian government found that just 8 per cent of Indians of university age are in higher education. \u003cbr/\u003eThat's half the average of the rest of Asia, with hundreds of thousands unable to find spots at schools.\u003cbr/\u003eThat gap is being filled by private players like Amity.\u003cbr/\u003eIt may remain small by Indian standards - the University of Delhi, for instance, has some 220,000 students - but Amity's exponential growth shows no signs of slowing.\u003cbr/\u003eThere has been talk of reviewing the highly subsidised fee structure of public universities to overcome the funds shortage faced by most colleges.\u003cbr/\u003eBut that may drive a significant number of low-income families out of the public education net.  \u003cbr/\u003eFor Chauhan's critics, private schools are little more than moneymaking schemes.\u003cbr/\u003eAditya Mishra is President of the Delhi University Teachers Association.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says private universities exist only to make money.\u003cbr/\u003eYet, Chauhan says education is like any other product in the market and private institutions provide better quality to the buyers. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile India still has hundreds of millions of people struggling in poverty, by some estimates it also has more than 250 million middle-class citizens.\u003cbr/\u003eDesperate to push their children even further ahead, middle-class parents have turned education into an industry.\u003cbr/\u003eBillboards advertising private institutes and tutoring companies can be seen everywhere in New Delhi, India's sprawling, crowded capital. \u003cbr/\u003eMany feel that the mushrooming of high-cost, market-driven private universities will further widen India's ever-growing gap between rich and poor.\u003cbr/\u003eMishra says private universities cannot be trusted with meeting the nation's social needs.\u003cbr/\u003eNonetheless, with India's rising middle classes, university student numbers are expected to
