NRG 89FM is the first radio station in Cambodia...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eCambodia's first ever 24-hour commercial radio station NRG is training a new generation of novice DJs from scratch. \u003cbr/\u003eThe station's the brainchild of two outsiders from France and Australia. \u003cbr/\u003eNRG 89FM is the first radio station in Cambodia to play popular music 24 hours a day.  \u003cbr/\u003eCambodia has two AM stations and more than 50 FM stations but NRG is the first to play pop music only, with no news, utilizing a format popular in many developed radio markets.\u003cbr/\u003eThe station, which plays a mix of international and Cambodian pop music, was launched in August 2012 and began broadcasting after a three month testing and training period.\u003cbr/\u003eCommercial radio veteran Frederic Bernard, originally from France, is NRG's station manager and co-founder, along with Australian businessman Anthony Galloway. \u003cbr/\u003eBernard says he saw a gap in the market: \"When I arrived six years ago, with my thirty years of experience in radio, I saw that no radio station was broadcasting music�or proposing a music radio station, only talk radio. So I thought that that's a gap in the market, someone should fill it - lets do it, not only for the market but to have a lot of fun doing it.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eThe radio studio is equipped with modern broadcasting technology and engineers based in Singapore and France are on hand to fix any technical glitches remotely.\u003cbr/\u003eAll of the DJs hired had no previous experience. They were taken on thanks solely to their personalities. \u003cbr/\u003e21-year-old presenter \"Mywife\", whose real name is Lalin, wanted to be an actress before she won a job as a DJ at NRG. She says : \"When I came here I didn't know how to use the equipment and my hands were shaking. They gave me a chance to learn, yes a chance to learn everything, and it didn't take long - after about one week I could do it\". \u003cbr/\u003eDJs like Vannak have overcome their lack of experience with lots of hard work.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I spent a lot of time here learning, I was rubbing shoulders with people with a lot of experience but at first I didn't know anything - I didn't know how to speak properly or how to use the equipment but I kept at it. I spent a lot of time here practicing and I soon began to really love it, being a professional DJ - I'm very happy now\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eNow Vannak is returning the favour by helping train other novice DJs like Visal.\u003cbr/\u003eFinding on-air talent that was suited to commercial radio was a problem because old broadcasting habits were too ingrained, says Bernard. \u003cbr/\u003eCurrently the station broadcasts to Phnom Penh and the surrounding provinces only - which include half of Cambodia's population - with plans to cover the entire country by the end of 2014.   \u003cbr/\u003eAP Television\u003cbr/\u003ePhnom Penh, Cambodia - August 23 2013\u003cbr/\u003e1. So we choose people based on character, on personality more than experience.
