(June 24)\u003cbr/\u003e     \"The reason it appears nationally that we're on the cusp of passing gay marriage in New York state, and we're not, is because of the way Albany works, the capitol in Albany. We've got the republican senate, the majority in the senate, so whatever bill gets to the floor, they have to agree with it. In conference, most of the republican senators don't support gay marriage. Now that doesn't mean they're not going to send it to the floor but there is a really difficult discussion that has to go on before they make that decision. There are 31 votes that we know of that are for gay marriage at this point, that we know of, at this point. You need 32 votes in the senate to pass it. That would give it legislative approval. The assembly has already approved it. It's governor Cuomo's bill, he'll sign it, that's how close we are. But as close as it seems we are, that's a major, major obstacle in the republican conference, they have political considerations, there is also genuine concern about the bill, about the ideology of it.\u003cbr/\u003e[NATSOT: protestors]\u003cbr/\u003e\"For the advocates of gay marriage New York is huge: it's the media capitol of the world. If something is done here, everybody knows about it all over the world, it becomes a major thing. Politically it's important too because New York has always been a progressive state. The Democrats who support gay marriage have been saying for a long time 'hey not only should we do this but we should have done it a long time ago' . But there's a difference about New York: you go outside New York and everyone thinks its New York City, and it's not.  New York state has New York City which is dominated by democrats and they are really in control of the Assembly, where this has passed easily. The senate has most of its representatives representing suburban areas and upstate areas which could be rural. So we have two houses that are very different.
