These are files that document the history of allegations of abuse in scouting and how the Boy Scouts responded to those allegations.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSOT Kelly Clark, Portland attorney: \"There have been many questions as to the significance of these files. The significance to the public is the same significance as it was at trial to the jury, which is that they represent a body of knowledge that the Boy Scouts of America had that no other youth organization had at that time or since. And what we want as the take away from this is that organizations understand how pedophiles operate, how child molesters infiltrate youth organizations. There are a lot of myths out there and unfortunately we know the lessons still have to be learned. The Sanduski case is an ideal example. The way that he operated is the same way that many of these scout leaders operated.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSOT Paul Mones, Attorney: \"What these files represent is really while we can read through the files, for us it represents the pain and the anguish of thousand of untold scouts. While there are 1247 files, we know that each scout leader molested on the average more than one scout. In fact, the testimony at trail was what? Five to 25. So we know the numbers are in the thousands and most of these people will never, ever, ever come out. Many people who may read these files will still stay silent. And so we know the Boy Scouts have also, we've had a number of questions in the past few days, have made some improvements, but we think there's more still to be done. \u003cbr/\u003eAgain and again, decade after decade, an array of authorities _ police chiefs, prosecutors, pastors and local Boy Scout leaders among them _ quietly shielded scoutmasters and others accused of molesting children, a newly opened trove of confidential papers shows.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the time, those authorities justified their actions as necessary to protect the good name and good works of Scouting, a pillar of 20th century America. But as detailed in 14,500 pages of secret \"perversion files\" released Thursday by order of the Oregon Supreme Court, their maneuvers allowed sexual predators to go free while victims suffered in silence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe files are a window on a much larger collection of documents the Boy Scouts of America began collecting soon after their founding in 1910. The files, kept at Boy Scout headquarters in Texas, consist of memos from local and national Scout executives, handwritten letters from victims and their parents and newspaper clippings about legal cases. The files contain details about proven molesters, but also unsubstantiated allegations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe allegations stretch across the country and to military bases overseas, from a small town in the Adirondacks to downtown Los Angeles. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the news conference Thursday, Portland attorney Kelly Clark blasted the Boy Scouts for their continuing legal battles to try to keep the full trove of files secret.\u003cbr/\u003eClark told reporters \"what we want as the take away from this is that organizations understand how pedofiles operate, how child molesters infiltrate youth organizations.
