The former American Idol judge is making her first ever visit to Israel, unusual perhaps for a Jewish woman with a...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eSinger, dancer, actress, choreographer - and now Paula Abdul can add the words \"religious pilgrim\" to her resume. \u003cbr/\u003eThe former American Idol judge is making her first ever visit to Israel, unusual perhaps for a Jewish woman with a deep-rooted spiritual side.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Beyond being Jewish, I've always found myself to be very much in tune with spirituality\" says Abdul, at the end of a day spent touring Jerusalem's Old City - home to numerous sites holy to Islam, Christianity and Judaism - where she was hounded by Israeli paparazzi. \u003cbr/\u003eShe's visited the Western Wall, and may hold a bet mitzvah ceremony - the Jewish ceremony of womanhood - before she leaves the country. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I feel very grateful coming to Israel now, where as a woman I know who I am, a lot more than even 10 years ago\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe trip is being hosted by the Israeli Ministry of Tourism and Israelife Media Group, which aims to promote Israel in the US by bringing Jewish celebrities on cultural tours. Abdul describes it as \"the most magnificent trip I've ever taken... magical and emotional, spiritual\".\u003cbr/\u003eFor 51-year old Abdul, who started her professional career more than 30 years ago, the trip gives her the chance to experience the country without the non-stop schedule of a concert tour, or a production line of media appearances. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I've traveled the world touring and things like that but I don't get the chance to see much of wherever I'm at\" says the Rush, Rush singer. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter cheerleading for the LA Lakers in the early 1980s, Abdul was hired to choreograph routines for The Jacksons, and later branched out into a highly successful singing career. She notched up six number one hit singles on the Billboard Chart between 1989 and 1991. \u003cbr/\u003eBy now an Emmy and Grammy-award winner, Abdul reinvented herself in 2002 with a long running judging spot on American Idol during a time when it produced some of its biggest stars like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson.\u003cbr/\u003eThese days Abdul declares herself \"a fan of talent\", and in early 2014 she'll be taking her extensive dance experience Down Under as a main judge on So You Think You Can Dance Australia. \"I dance because I have to, because I'm so passionate about it\". \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, there is one controversial dance craze that Abdul is not a fan of - twerking. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Twerking has been around for many many years\" she explains, and recalls that in early rap videos there were \"girls bending down and twerking all over the place\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe hip-thrusting move has been popularized in recent months by singer Miley Cyrus, who is fond of sticking her tongue out while doing the dance, which is seen as sexually provocative by many; sexually exploitative by some. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think when girls dance, they should be girls\" says Abdul who famously won a Grammy for dancing with a cartoon cat in the video for her 1990 hit single \"Opposites Attract.\"\u003cbr/\u003e++SOURCE: GPO (Government Press Office) - Access all ++\u003cbr/\u003eJerusalem - 29 October  2013\u003cbr/\u003e1.
